Police Inspector’s death: RULAAC petitions IGP, seeks justice, compensation for family

The tragic killing of Police Inspector Shedrack Amechi by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi State has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has taken up the case, demanding a thorough investigation and accountability from the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to reports, Inspector Amechi was shot and killed on August 27, 2025, while on duty to effect the arrest of a suspect being shielded by NSCDC operatives.

The incident has highlighted the dangers of inter-agency conflicts and the need for accountability in law enforcement agencies.

RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, has condemned the killing, stressing that it is not just a personal tragedy but also an institutional matter.

The organization has called on the IGP to expedite action and ensure justice, warning that unnecessary delays or cover-ups would undermine public confidence in law enforcement and threaten national security.

The petition addressed to the IGP outlines four key demands: a prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation; accountability for those responsible; adequate redress and compensation for the Amechi family; and institutional assurance to serving police officers that their families will not be abandoned if they lose their lives in the line of duty.

As the investigation unfolds, RULAAC has vowed to follow up on the matter, expecting regular updates from the Force Headquarters on the progress of the investigation.
