Mother, son escape death as Lexus SUV somersaults at NYSC Bus Stop on LASU–Isheri Expressway

A mother and her son on Tuesday miraculously escaped death after a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle overturned multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop corridor along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.

According to the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the lone but serious accident occurred in the early hours of the day amid peak-hour vehicular movement along the busy Lagos State University axis.

According to LASTMA, preliminary assessments indicate that the Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT, travelling from Isheri inward Igando, suddenly lost stability, causing the vehicle to somersault three times before coming to a halt.

Operatives of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority deployed within the corridor swiftly mobilised to the scene and carried out a coordinated rescue operation.

The occupants, a mother and her son, were successfully extricated from the severely damaged vehicle.

They sustained visible bruises and mild physiological trauma but survived the crash, narrowly avoiding what could have been a fatal incident.

Security support was immediately provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Igando Division.

The officers ensured effective crowd control and maintained order at the scene throughout the rescue and evacuation process.

Family members of the victims reportedly arrived shortly after receiving notification and conveyed both the woman and her son for further medical evaluation and treatment.

To prevent secondary collisions and minimise traffic congestion along the ever-busy corridor, LASTMA officials coordinated the evacuation of the accidented vehicle with support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). The wrecked SUV was subsequently handed over to the Police for further investigation and necessary administrative procedures.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed profound relief that the incident did not claim any lives.

He extended heartfelt wishes for the speedy recovery of the victims and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management, and sustained road safety enforcement.

Bakare-Oki also admonished motorists to adhere strictly to prescribed speed limits and to carry out routine mechanical checks, particularly on critical safety components such as braking systems, before embarking on any journey.

He warned that excessive speed, when combined with mechanical deficiencies, remains a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies, especially on major expressways across the state.
