Morenikeji premieres in Ibadan after festival screenings, eyes wider distribution

The Yoruba-language film, Morenikeji, was formally unveiled to the public on Sunday, June 12, 2022, with a colourful premiere held at Mauve 21 Events Centre, Ring Road, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The premiere brought together actors, filmmakers, guests, supporters and stakeholders in the Nigerian film industry, who gathered to celebrate the production and its journey from festival screenings to its public debut.

Produced and executive produced by actress and filmmaker Karamot Adeboye, Morenikeji features a blend of veteran performers and emerging talents, reflecting the production team’s effort to combine experience with fresh voices in Yoruba-language filmmaking.

The film stars respected veteran actors Binta Ayo Mogaji and Olaiya Aderupoko, alongside Damilola Oni, Samuel Olaoluwa Olasehinde and Adeboye, who also took on a role in the production.

Directed by Korede Ola, the movie explores themes surrounding human relationships, personal struggles and the social pressures that confront individuals and communities.

The story was extensively developed by Damilola Olumuyiwa, who also served as one of the producers of the project.

The Ibadan premiere came after Morenikeji had already been screened at film festivals, where it was presented to selected audiences, filmmakers and other professionals within the motion picture industry.

The festival outings provided the production team with an opportunity to introduce the movie to audiences before its public premiere while also receiving early reactions and generating interest in the project.

Speaking during the premiere, Adeboye expressed satisfaction with the response the film had received during its festival screenings, describing the reception as encouraging.

She said the production was part of her commitment to using the Yoruba language and culture as a platform for telling stories that resonate with audiences while addressing issues that affect society.

According to her, the cast and crew put considerable effort into creating a production capable of entertaining viewers while also stimulating conversations around the themes and challenges presented in the story.

Adeboye further disclosed that plans were underway to take Morenikeji to special screenings and select cinemas after its Ibadan premiere.

She explained that the planned screenings would enable audiences in other locations to see the film while providing opportunities for members of the cast and production crew to engage directly with viewers.

The producer also indicated that the team would continue to explore opportunities for further festival presentations, exhibition and distribution as part of efforts to take the film to a wider audience.

The participation of veteran actors such as Ayo Mogaji and Olaiya Aderupoko added to the anticipation surrounding the premiere. Their presence also underscored the production’s effort to bring together established names in the Yoruba film industry and a new generation of performers.

The performances of Damilola Oni, Samuel Olaoluwa Olasehinde, Adeboye and other members of the cast further contributed to the production, which seeks to tell a culturally relevant story through the Yoruba language.

Guests at the premiere commended the cast and crew for completing the project and providing another platform for the promotion of Yoruba-language storytelling and Nigerian cultural narratives.
