Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has initiated a transformative effort to change the political environment of the State, dismantling traditional obstacles and empowering the citizens.

His administration has initiated an innovative strategy that emphasizes active participation, reducing the power of city politicians and strengthening local ward members.

The governor’s appointment of Personal Assistants from every ward in Akwa Ibom State stands out as one of his most important reforms.

In contrast to earlier methods where powerful politicians selected nominees from their comfortable homes, Eno has required that these important roles be filled by individuals nominated directly by their wards.

This action guarantees that the appointed officials understand local issues and truly represent the interests of residents in each ward, and it was compulsory for them to reside within the ward.

Governor Umo Eno, as the leader of the party,  issued a standing order that ensured elections for party executives were conducted transparently, enabling each ward to nominate and elect its representatives free from external interference.

Governor Eno Ph.D has pushed for ward leadership to propose candidates who live in their neighborhoods, which helps to remove the political process from the influence of metropolitan elites.

This selection process, driven by grassroots efforts, represents a major change in governance and promotes ownership and accountability among local leaders.

For the first time in history, Pastor Umo Eno Ph.D has empowered the members of People’s Democratic Party to nominate their councilor and chairmanship candidates without any influence from political elites.

This unique decision emphasizes his loyalty to democratic ideals and indicates his conviction that communities should possess the authority to elect trustworthy leaders for their development. Through local elections, Eno has given citizens the power to manage their own governance.

Furthermore, the governor has changed the selection method for Supervisory Councilors and Special Advisers. In a time when elite nominations typically dictated such appointments, Eno has shifted this authority back to the wards.

Each ward now selects its own representatives, removing the earlier trend of multiple supervisors coming from one family or political group.

This reform improves representation and strengthens the local governance system by making sure diverse voices are acknowledged.

The recent expansion of representation from seven or nine members to sixteen in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly highlights Eno’s commitment to inclusivity.

This modification ensures that each ward has at least one representative, which enables a wider range of perspectives and ideas to shape local government development.
