Sustainable transport: FRSC Corps Marshal highlights importance of safety, accountability

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has emphasized that safety, efficiency, and accountability are the fundamental components of a sustainable transportation system in any society.

The statement underscores the importance of a multifaceted approach to transportation development, prioritizing not only the movement of people and goods but also the safety and well-being of all road users.

Speaking at the 11th Nigeria Transport Lecture (NTL), organized by Transport Day Media in Lagos, Corps Marshal/Chief Executive, Shehu Mohammed, explained that “For us at the FRSC, sustainability in transport begins with safety, efficiency and accountability.

The commission boss represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer, in charge of Lagos and Ogun states, ACM Ann Oladayo, further explained, “Our mandate goes beyond enforcement — we are partners in policy advocacy, vehicle technology integration, public enlightenment, and inter-agency collaboration. In this regard, the Corps has adopted digital innovations in vehicle registration, drivers’ licensing, traffic data analytics, and patrol operations — all designed to reduce crashes and support cleaner, smarter road usage.
Nonetheless.

“However, we must admit that the government alone cannot achieve true sustainability. It requires an all-of-society approach — from regulators, to transport operators, to commuters, to the private sector. This is why fora like this are invaluable.

“As we look ahead, the Corps remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s transport system is not just mobile, but also safe, smart, inclusive, and future-ready”, he assured.

Applauding the theme of the lecture which is “Sustainable Transportation in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges”, he pledged the support of the FRSC in ensuring sustainability in the Nigerian transport system.

Also, in his lead paper presentation, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, stated that despite the progress made so far in promoting sustainable transportation initiatives in Nigeria, infrastructure deficiencies, insecurity, operational challenges, union issues, decarbonization and lack of clear policy, structure and processes remains the bane of a sustainable transportation system in the country.

The lecture was well attended by key stakeholders in the transportation industry including the Lagos state government, federal government agencies, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Nahco Aviance Plc, Nexant Consulting, and transport and affiliated firms among others.
