Release of Oriire victims brings hope, relief to Nigeria – Grand Chief Imam

Grand Chief Imam of Oyo Land, Sheikh Al-Imam (Barrister) Bilal Husayn Akinola Akeugberu, has welcomed with immense joy the successful rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the development as a moment of relief, hope and thanksgiving for the nation.

In a statement issued on Friday, the respected Islamic leader said the release of the victims after fifty-six agonising days in captivity was a testament to the mercy of Almighty Allah and the resilience of those who worked tirelessly to secure their freedom.

He said the safe return of the children and their teachers had restored hope to their families, renewed public confidence and brought joy to Nigerians who had remained united in prayers throughout the difficult period.

“The Almighty Allah has answered our prayers. Our supplications have been accepted, our pains relieved, and our sorrows turned into joy as our children and their teachers have returned home safely,” the Grand Chief Imam declared.

Sheikh Akeugberu expressed appreciation to the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abdul Hakeem Abimbola Owoade Elewuetu I, for demonstrating exemplary leadership, compassion and unwavering support throughout the crisis.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to ensuring the rescue of the victims, praising the President’s directives that contributed to the successful operation and his assurance that justice would be served while adequate medical and humanitarian assistance would be provided to the rescued children and teachers.

The Islamic leader equally lauded Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims.

Special tribute was paid to officers and personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other intelligence and security agencies for what he described as their professionalism, courage, sacrifice and relentless efforts in executing the rescue operation without collateral damage.

According to him, the commitment of the security personnel to protecting lives and safeguarding the nation’s peace deserves the highest recognition and appreciation.

The Grand Chief Imam also acknowledged the contributions of Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations, media practitioners and countless Nigerians who stood by the affected families through prayers, advocacy and moral support during the ordeal.

While celebrating the rescue, Sheikh Akeugberu extended condolences to the family of the late Mr. Oyedokun, who lost his life during the unfortunate incident.

He prayed that Almighty Allah would comfort the bereaved family and grant them the strength to bear the painful loss while ensuring that justice prevails.

He urged governments at all levels to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities to prevent future abductions, stressing that the safety of children must remain a national priority.

The Grand Chief Imam concluded by praying for continued divine guidance and protection for the Alaafin of Oyo, President Tinubu, Governor Makinde, members of the security agencies and the nation as a whole.

He also prayed that Almighty Allah would continue to preserve Nigeria in peace, unity, justice and prosperity while protecting schools, communities and future generations from similar tragedies.
