Political parties get fresh window as INEC shifts 2027 candidate submission deadline

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of lists of candidates by political parties for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections, giving parties an additional three days to complete the nomination process.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the Commission announced that the earlier deadline of Saturday, July 11, 2026, contained in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, has now been shifted to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

According to INEC, the decision followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which requested more time on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the stipulated period.

The electoral umpire explained that the extension was granted to ensure that all political parties have a fair opportunity to participate in the electoral process while remaining within the provisions of the law.

INEC said the move demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity, transparency and fairness in the conduct of the electoral process, noting that it remains determined to create a level playing field for all registered political parties.

The Commission urged political parties to take full advantage of the extension by completing the upload of all required candidate information before the new deadline expires.

It warned that no further extension should be expected after the expiration of the revised deadline and advised parties to comply strictly with the timetable to avoid disqualification of candidates or other administrative complications.
