Political leaders, let’s take a lesson from Gov. Umo Eno

Often, one observes leaders who have been elevated by divine providence establishing social hierarchies that create a distinct divide between themselves and others.

These leaders frequently dictate who is deemed worthy of their attention or companionship, often disregarding those who were once part of their journey during more challenging times.

They tend to feign ignorance towards individuals who stood by them during their periods of struggle and wilderness experience.

In stark contrast, Pastor Umo Eno exemplifies a down-to-earth leadership style that is both refreshing and commendable.

He embodies humility and accessibility, recognizing that true leadership is not about elevating oneself above others but about serving and uplifting those around him.

Pastor Eno’s approach expands an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and acknowledged, regardless of their past circumstances.

He understands that the strength of a leader lies in their ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and he actively seeks to engage with individuals who may have once been overlooked or marginalized.

Governor Umo Eno is maintaining genuine relationships with those who supported him during his own wilderness experiences, He not only honours their contributions but also reinforces the idea that leadership is a collective journey.

His down-to-earth demeanor and willingness to listen and learn from others serve as a powerful reminder that effective leadership is rooted in empathy, respect, and a commitment to the community.

In doing so, he inspires others to rise together, fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration that transcends social barriers.
During the Governor’s recent trip to inaugurate a road construction project, he took a moment to reflect on the profound connections of his past.

As he sat in his vehicle, he spotted a family with whom he once shared a deep bond. Without hesitation, he paused his entourage, gracefully exited and called out to the woman, demonstrating his genuine warmth and humility.

He instructed his security team to grant them unfettered access, and as they approached, he walked toward them with open arms, embodying a spirit of compassion and love.

Overwhelmed with emotion, the woman, accompanied by her daughter, could not contain her tears. In witnessing their heartfelt reaction, the Governor was also moved to tears, showcasing his empathetic nature.

Recognizing their need for support, he promptly arranged for the woman and her daughter to be escorted back to the government premises in his backup vehicle.

This poignant moment truly exemplifies the essence of a godly leader, one who leads with humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of his constituents.

Many people assume that the Governor of Akwa Ibom State embodies humility solely because he is a pastor. However, I beg to differ. I have witnessed pastors who, beneath a veneer of piety, exhibit rudeness, allowing their security personnel to treat others with contempt, all while they stand by, indifferent.

Some pastors show little regard for their congregation, treating them with harshness whenever they dare to approach without prior permission.

In stark contrast, Governor Umo Eno’s humility and compassion are deeply ingrained in his very essence; they are not merely a façade or a superficial display crafted for the sake of appearances or political gain.

Just last Sunday, during an anniversary celebration at a church, an elderly woman joyously approached the Governor, asking him to join her in a dance. He graciously set aside the protocols surrounding him, danced with her, and even offered her money to support her well-being.

This kind of leadership is a rarity in Akwa Ibom State, and indeed in Nigeria as a whole. We often witness common Commissioners treating constituents with disdain, humiliating their relatives by forcing them to wait all day without even a moment of acknowledgment.

I recall a Senior Special Assistant from a previous administration who once slapped a man from his village simply for seeking assistance.

Too often, those whom God has elevated to positions of power become like demigods, engulfed in arrogance and elitism, forgetting their roots and the struggles they once faced.

They treat others with disdain, elevating themselves above those who once stood by them. Any individual who fails to appreciate the people who supported them during their challenging times is destined to return to those very struggles.

I fondly recall the early days of Governor Umo Eno’s tenure, particularly a poignant moment that exemplified his character. While traveling along the Calabar-Itu road, he encountered an elderly woman struggling to cross the highway.

Without hesitation, Governor Umo Eno, Ph.D., brought his convoy to a halt. He approached her with compassion, offering a warm embrace and inquiring about her health.

Demonstrating his commitment to the well-being of his constituents, he subsequently instructed his physician to escort her to the Government House clinic, ensuring she received the medical attention she deserved.

Governor Umo Eno cultures the essence of empathetic leadership. He shares in the sorrows of his people, providing nourishment to the hungry, facilitating medical care for the sick, and offering financial assistance to those striving for self-sufficiency.

This brings to mind a young woman who aspired to produce powdered foods but faced significant obstacles. Lacking the necessary machinery and workspace, her limited capital hindered her from becoming a commercial producer.

During an empowerment programme at Uyo Stadium, she mustered the courage to reach out to the Governor. With tears in her eyes, she shared her plight.

In a Sympathetic display of responsiveness, Governor Umo Eno instructed his security personnel to allow her to approach him. Within just four days, she received production equipment valued at over three million Naira, along with a capital investment of two million Naira to help her business thrive.

This is what true leadership looks like, treating the people with dignity and ensuring they feel that the Governor they elected is genuinely deserving of their trust and support.

Governor Umo Eno has dismantled the barriers of elitist leadership, making himself accessible to those in need.

He carries the weight of his people’s struggles on his shoulders, striving to uplift them from hardship rather than seeking personal enrichment.

Governor Umo Eno serves as a model of leadership worthy of study in academic institutions. I believe that any aspiring political leader who wishes to set an exemplary standard should adopt his approach.

He remains grounded as Umo, the son of Bassey, whose grandfather was Eno, and whose roots trace back to Ikot Ekpene Udo in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, and who once began his journey by selling rice and stew by the roadside.

His story is proof of the power of humility and service in leadership.
