Police arrest ‘Proxy Suspect’, demand N300,000 bribe in Imo

A rights group, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has petitioned the Imo State Police Commissioner over the alleged unlawful arrest of one Chinweikpe Ugwu by operatives from the Anti Vice Unit of the command and demanding a bribe of N300,000 to release him.

In a letter signed by RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma alleged that the operatives arrested Chinweikpe in place of his older brother, Ifeanyi Ugwu, whom they were looking for.

According to the petition, the operatives did not disclose their purpose or produce any warrant before arresting Chinweikpe, who had been detained at the QIT cell.

RULAAC also alleged that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) is demanding a bribe of N300,000 from Chinweikpe’s family for his release.

The group urged the police commissioner to investigate the actions of the operatives and ensure Chinweikpe’s safety and release.
