Nigeria strengthens regional diplomacy at Benin’s 66th independence anniversary

Federal Republic of Nigeria on Saturday joined the Government and people of the Republic of Benin in commemorating the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the enduring bonds of friendship, mutual respect and regional cooperation that have continued to define relations between the two neighbouring West African nations.

The colourful ceremony, held at the iconic Amazone Square in Cotonou, brought together government officials, diplomats, military leaders and thousands of citizens in a grand celebration of Benin’s independence.

According to the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 9 Brigade, Major Akinola Ajibola, the event featured a blend of military pageantry and cultural displays, with the Nigerian contingent emerging as one of the major attractions.

Representing Nigeria, the contingent, led by the Commander, 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, delivered a flawless march-past in both slow and quick time, demonstrating remarkable discipline, precision and coordination.

Their outstanding performance earned enthusiastic applause from the President of the Republic of Benin, Mr. Romuald Wadagni, as well as other distinguished guests and spectators.

The highlight of Nigeria’s participation was the Nigerian Army’s spectacular silent drill display, which showcased exceptional dexterity, synchronization and mastery in arms handling.

The captivating performance drew prolonged standing ovations from the audience and further demonstrated the professionalism and operational excellence of the Nigerian Army.

Also present at the ceremony were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Her Excellency Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim; the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the Republic of Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya; senior military officers; government officials; members of the diplomatic corps; and representatives of several friendly nations.

Nigeria’s participation in the celebration underscored the strong bilateral relations between both countries and highlighted the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to military diplomacy, regional security cooperation and the promotion of peace and stability across West Africa.

Beyond the impressive military display, the event served as a reminder of the deep historical, cultural and economic ties shared by Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration among neighbouring countries in addressing regional challenges and advancing collective development.

The outstanding performance by the Nigerian contingent projected Nigeria’s military professionalism on the international stage while further strengthening the spirit of friendship and solidarity that has long existed between the two nations.
