NEO 2026 produces 12 outstanding engineering teams for National Innovation Stage

Twelve of Nigeria’s most promising engineering teams have qualified for the national stage of the 2026 Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO) following the successful conclusion of the regional competition held across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The competition, which attracted 30 shortlisted teams from universities and polytechnics nationwide, showcased groundbreaking innovations designed to address critical challenges in healthcare, energy, agriculture, security, infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing.

The regional contest marked another significant milestone in NEO’s mission to promote engineering excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving among young Nigerians.
Hosted simultaneously in Yenagoa, Enugu, Ibadan, Abuja, Yola, and Kano, the competition brought together teams from federal, state, and private tertiary institutions.

Ahead of the regional stage, each participating team received a grant of ₦3 million to support prototype development, technical mentorship, and logistics.

After rigorous technical assessments, project demonstrations, and presentations before panels of experts, two teams from each geopolitical zone emerged victorious, earning tickets to the next phase of the competition.

The 12 successful teams will now proceed to an intensive national bootcamp in Lagos, where they will receive mentorship from engineering professionals, business leaders, industry experts, and innovation specialists.

The bootcamp is aimed at enhancing participants’ technical expertise, business development skills, and presentation capabilities while helping them refine their innovations into scalable and commercially viable enterprises.

Following the bootcamp, the teams will compete in semi-final knockout rounds that will produce four finalists. The finalists will then battle for a share of ₦100 million in seed funding, alongside continued technical and business support to transform their ideas into sustainable ventures capable of making meaningful impacts across Nigeria and beyond.

Among the outstanding innovations selected from the South-South region is Team Protronics from the University of Port Harcourt, which developed Keytric, a WiFi-enabled smart mechanical door lock designed to reduce energy waste and fire risks. Also qualifying is Team Vhorde from the University of Benin with its AI-powered smart glasses system developed to assist visually impaired persons.

In the South-East, Team Flameless of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, impressed judges with its technology that converts flare gas into electricity for host communities, while The Oil Alchemist Team from Imo State University developed a portable pyrolysis system capable of converting waste engine oil into valuable energy products.

Representing the South-West, Team Health Guardian of the University of Lagos developed a portable device for the early detection of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), a major contributor to maternal and infant health complications. Team Aurora of the University of Ibadan also secured qualification with Aurora Birth, a health technology solution designed to reduce neonatal deaths resulting from birth asphyxia.

In the North-Central zone, Team Fortizo of the University of Jos developed FarmAnchor, a solar-powered and AI-enabled device that assists farmers in detecting crop diseases and soil nutrient deficiencies. Team TRI-CATALYST of the University of Abuja also advanced after developing a locally sourced catalyst aimed at improving gasoline quality in refining processes.

From the North-East, Team Goodnews of the Nigerian Army University earned a place at the national stage with PipePatrol, an AI-powered pipeline surveillance system designed to improve infrastructure security. Team Mavericks of Modibbo Adama University also qualified with Ubuntu Sapphire, a community-based rapid emergency alert system.

Representing the North-West are Team Adustech of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, which developed an automated solar-powered agricultural dryer, and Team Agritherm Solutions of Ahmadu Bello University, whose innovation focuses on solar-powered cold storage systems for smallholder farmers in off-grid communities.

According to the organisers, projects were assessed based on technical merit and innovation, practicality and scalability, as well as societal impact and sustainability.

The successful completion of the regional competition further underscores the enormous potential of Nigerian youths to drive innovation and provide practical solutions to national challenges through engineering and technology.

The organisers noted that creating platforms that connect young innovators with industry expertise, mentorship, and funding opportunities remains critical to strengthening Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem and developing future industry leaders.

The Nigerian Engineering Olympiad is a strategic initiative designed to address Nigeria’s engineering skills gap and build a pipeline of highly skilled innovators capable of contributing to the country’s energy, manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure sectors.

The initiative is sponsored by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, funded by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company, technically supported by the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and implemented by Enactus Nigeria.
