N120bn fake products destroyed: NUMTEN seeks compensation for members

National Union of Market Traders and Employers of Nigeria (NUMTEN) has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to invite manufacturers and organizations responsible for seized goods to compensate its members nationwide.

Speaking after the union’s beginning of the year mini-conference in Lagos, National President, Com. Chief James Chukwuma Ogu noted that NAFDAC destroyed over N120 billion worth of seized products from July to December 2024 across the six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory.

The agency’s efforts aimed to safeguard public health during the Yuletide season.

The union seeks compensation for its members affected by the seizure of fake products.

In their part, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of eating safely and staying safe during the festive period.

She warned Nigerians to avoid purchasing food and drinks from unidentifiable outlets and to be cautious of extremely cheap products, which may be compromised.

NUMTEN President advised members to always carry the union along when there is an issue in their place of business because they are empowered by law to protect the interest of the market traders nationwide.
