Insecurity: Govts, Nigerians yet To embrace technology, says security expert

Despite the precarious security situation the country is going through, Nigerians are yet to embrace globally used security engineering technology to fight crime and protect lives and assets, a prominent security engineer has said.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with People’s Forum Magazine/Online in his office, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Kontz Engineering Limited, Dr. Mustapha Kazeem Lusty, pointed out that the first thing that comes to the mind of an average Nigerian when he feels insecure is to go and meet one baba to fortify him with spiritual power while the second thing is to go to church and start praying for protection.

The security engineering technology expert stated that the third thing that the person does is to have a number of policemen around him.

According to Dr. Mustapha, the last thing that comes to his mind is technology, adding that this is what is in the mindset of a typical Nigerian.

However, he maintained that security engineering technology can make one know what is happening in his environment in other to be in charge security wise.

In his words: “If you have this technology, I can let you know everything that happens in your environment. You can be anywhere in the world and I can let you control your home, see everything and control everything.”

He said that it’s here that police with the power of response come in after security alert from technology which makes it easy to burst any criminal activity.

Dr. Mustapha explained that failure of both the government and the citizenry to combine technology with physical policing is responsible for the growing insecurity in the country.

He pointed out that technology is not physical like the way security personnel carry guns but very effective in bursting and arresting crime.

“You just need to launch cameras in the air, so if somebody commits crime we will see. Immediately you start using technology to arrest crime and people know that something is happening all of us will start adjusting ourselves,” he stated.

He maintained that everybody commits crime but doesn’t want to be known, adding that increasing the chances of arrests and reducing the chances of escape by deploying technology will force everybody to run away from crime.

The security expert urged Nigerian governments at all levels and the people to embrace technology to decimate crime in the society.
