GARDJA condemns terrorist attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso

Ghana Agriculture and Rural Development Journalists Association (GARDJA) has expressed profound shock and deepest condolences following the tragic terrorist attack in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, which claimed the lives of seven Ghanaian tomato traders and left at least four others injured.

In a statement signed by its President, Richmond Frimpong, the association described the incident as a senseless act of violence that has dealt a devastating blow to the victims’ families and Ghana’s agricultural sector.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragic incident,” the statement read.
GARDJA noted that the deceased traders were not only contributors to Ghana’s agricultural economy but also key actors in regional agricultural trade.

According to the association, their activities played an important role in strengthening food security, supporting rural livelihoods, and fostering economic ties within the West African sub-region.

“The loss of these lives is a devastating blow, not just to their immediate families but to the agricultural value chain at large,” the association stated.

The group called on the Government of Ghana, relevant security agencies, and regional partners to ensure the safe return of survivors and provide immediate medical and financial support to the injured.

It further urged authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard Ghanaian farmers and traders who operate across borders in pursuit of legitimate economic activities.

GARDJA emphasized the urgent need for stronger protective measures to secure agricultural trade routes and value chains, describing them as essential pillars of national and regional development.

“As journalists covering agriculture and rural development, we stand in solidarity with the victims, their families, and the wider trading community. We remain committed to raising awareness about the risks faced by our farmers and traders, advocating for their safety, and highlighting the resilience of our agricultural sector in the face of adversity,” the statement added.

The association concluded by reaffirming its dedication to promoting policies and actions that ensure the safety, sustainability, and growth of agricultural trade within the region.
