From scraps to solutions: Why Nigeria must harness corn husks for agriculture

In every corner of Nigeria’s farmlands and processing centers, heaps of agricultural leftovers are left to waste. Farmers strip away peels, husks, stalks, and shells, and most of these are either burnt or abandoned to decay.

Yet, in these neglected piles lies a treasure we have consistently overlooked. Among them, corn husks—those fibrous outer leaves discarded after harvest or processing—stand out as one of the most underutilized resources.

They are more than just agricultural refuse; they are a potential lifeline for farmers, animals, and soils across the country.

Nigeria’s agricultural sector faces a double crisis. On one hand, livestock farmers are groaning under the weight of escalating feed costs. It is no exaggeration to say that feed now accounts for nearly seventy percent of production costs, making poultry, goat, cattle, and sheep farming increasingly unsustainable for smallholders.

On the other hand, crop farmers are dealing with exhausted soils. Decades of dependence on chemical fertilizers have stripped the land of its organic vitality, leaving yields to decline year after year despite heavy investments.

Corn husks, and indeed other fibrous agricultural by-products, may offer a bridge across both crises if we are willing to rethink their value.

Consider their role in animal nutrition. Ruminants such as cattle, goats, and sheep require roughage in their diets to aid digestion, maintain rumen health, and keep their systems balanced. Corn husks, rich in cellulose and fiber, provide exactly that.

Of course, they are not naturally high in protein, which means they cannot replace more nutrient-dense feed ingredients on their own. But when properly processed and blended with other locally available materials, corn husks can form the foundation of an affordable and balanced diet for livestock.

For instance, ground or fermented husks can be mixed with maize bran, soybean meal, or groundnut cake to provide both energy and protein. Treated husks combined with cassava peels and palm kernel cake can sustain goats and sheep in a healthy condition, ensuring lean meat production while easing the farmer’s cost burden.

Even poultry, though less capable of digesting high fiber, can benefit from the inclusion of finely milled husks in small proportions, cutting down the overdependence on maize.

The implications of such feed innovations are profound. Imagine a cattle farmer in Kaduna who can reduce his reliance on imported feed concentrates by replacing a significant portion of his herd’s diet with processed corn husks sourced locally and cheaply.

Envision smallholder goat farmers in Ogun or Plateau cushioning themselves against the shock of rising maize and soy prices by turning to the very husks they once threw away.

Each adjustment may appear small, but multiplied across thousands of farmers nationwide, it could amount to billions saved in feed costs, greater self-reliance, and a livestock sector that no longer teeters so dangerously on the brink of collapse whenever global commodity prices rise.

Yet the potential of corn husks extends beyond animal bellies. They can also breathe life back into Nigeria’s tired soils. Spread as mulch, the fibrous leaves decompose slowly, helping fields retain moisture, reducing erosion, and suppressing weeds.

Farmers cultivating maize, yams, or vegetables could find their crops shaded and their soils protected simply by laying down a blanket of husks between rows.

Over time, this simple practice can improve soil structure and prevent the devastating nutrient losses that plague sandy and degraded fields in the northern regions.

Perhaps most exciting is the transformation of corn husks into compost. When shredded and combined with animal manure, crop residues, or green leaves, husks break down into rich, dark organic fertilizer. Unlike synthetic fertilizers that provide only a quick shot of nitrogen, compost restores the very life of the soil, building its capacity to hold water, nurture microbes, and sustain crops season after season.

A farmer who collects husks from a nearby processing plant, mixes them with poultry droppings and bean stalks, and patiently composts them for a few months will return to his fields with a natural fertilizer far more sustainable than anything imported in a bag.

For communities battling desertification, such as those in the Sahel fringes of northern Nigeria, the difference between barren soil and productive land could well be determined by the application of compost made from what was once dismissed as trash.

This is not a theory. Around the world, countries are already doing it. In the United States and Brazil, corn residues are ensiled and converted into animal feed, or used as raw material for bio-based products.

In Ghana, researchers are unlocking the value of cocoa pod husks for both feed and fertilizer. In Kenya, maize stover is being tested as silage and compost. Nigeria has all it takes to do the same, and on a scale that could reshape our agricultural economy. What we lack is not raw material but the vision and commitment to repurpose it.

So why has Nigeria not embraced corn husks? The answers lie in gaps in research, policy, and awareness. Universities and agricultural institutes have paid little attention to the nutritional profile of husks, their processing methods, and their soil impact.

Policymakers have not created incentives for waste-to-wealth enterprises, leaving farmers and processors without the framework to scale innovative uses of husks. Awareness among smallholders remains low, and without demonstration projects or extension services, many will continue to see husks as nothing more than refuse.

But change is possible. With targeted research, pilot programs, and farmer training, corn husks could be repositioned as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s agricultural strategy. Imagine research institutes conducting feed trials across regions to determine the best husk-based diets for cattle or poultry.

Picture processing plants setting up small composting units, turning waste into bags of organic fertilizer sold back to local farmers. Visualize cooperative societies investing in husk-ensiling facilities to ensure livestock feed availability throughout the dry season.

The pieces of the puzzle are all within reach; what is required is the political and institutional will to put them together.

When I speak to farmers, their frustrations are raw and urgent. A herdsman in Kaduna once told me, “If feed costs drop, my cattle will survive. But if they keep rising, I will have no choice but to sell off.” A crop farmer in Ogun confessed, “Our soils are tired. Fertilizer is expensive, but the land gives less each year.”

These voices echo the same truth: our farmers are stretched thin, and they are desperate for solutions. Corn husks offer one such solution—not imported, not foreign, but homegrown, affordable, and sustainable.

The time has come to stop seeing waste as waste. Corn husks, coconut shells, cassava peels, maize stalks—these are not worthless scraps but untapped resources that can feed our animals, restore our soils, and create new industries.

To researchers, I say: take up this challenge and study it with urgency. To policymakers: create the incentives, fund the programs, and enable entrepreneurs to turn husks into products of value. To farmers: do not wait for perfect solutions from abroad; begin experimenting with what is already in your hands.

Every husk that rots is a meal lost, a soil unfed, a chance wasted. But every husk harnessed is wealth created, sustainability gained, and resilience secured.

Nigeria’s agricultural future will not be built by importing answers but by reimagining the materials already around us. Corn husks, once cast aside, could very well become the cornerstone of that future. The only question is whether we will act before it is too late.

The truth is simple: the time to act is now.
