FENRAD calls for immediate attention to erosion control in Ebem Ohafia, Abia State

Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has issued an urgent call to the Federal and Abia State governments to intervene in the devastating erosion crisis in Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The advocacy group emphasizes that immediate attention is necessary to mitigate the effects of erosion, which has become a significant threat to the community’s existence.

According to the Executive Director, FENRAD, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the erosion has posed significant threats to the lives and properties of residents in the area, causing severe environmental degradation and economic hardship.

Over the years the erosion in Ebem Ohafia has intensified, resulting in damages and impacts, such as property damage, displacement of families, etc.

The situation demands immediate intervention and proactive measures from the Abia State Government to mitigate further damage and protect the affected families.

FENRAD calls upon the Abia State Government to, conduct a comprehensive assessment of the erosion-affected areas in Ebem Ohafia to ascertain the extent of the damage and risks posed to the community.

Implement urgent erosion control measures, including construction of drainage systems, reinforcement of embankments, and other necessary infrastructure to prevent further erosion safeguard lives and properties, and provide immediate relief and support to affected residents, including temporary shelter, food, and other essential needs.

Develop and implement a sustainable long-term plan for erosion management and environmental conservation in Ebem Ohafia, ensuring community involvement and resilience building.

FENRAD remains committed to advocating for environmental rights and ensuring sustainable development in Abia State.

We urged the Abia State Government to prioritize the welfare and safety of its citizens by addressing the erosion crisis in Ebem Ohafia promptly.
