Failure to protect Borno is the failure of Nigeria’s idea, Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Borno State, particularly in the Marte area.

In his X account, he praised Governor Babagana Zulum’s leadership, citing his decision to spend the night in a town under threat as a demonstration of courageous and people-centered leadership.

Obi lamented that the situation in Borno is not just a local emergency but a national alarm bell that requires immediate attention.

He noted that over 300 communities are exposed to danger, and more than 20,000 people have been displaced, stressing that these numbers represent families, children, and communities whose hopes are hanging by a thread.

The former presidential candidate highlighted Governor Zulum’s critical concerns, including the regrouping of insurgents around Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, the imminent collapse of Marte, and the urgent need for action.

Obi emphasized that acknowledging these facts is not enough; the Federal Government must respond with urgency and sincerity.

Obi called for the Federal Government to provide reinforcements to security forces, protect displaced citizens, and demonstrate the will to act swiftly and consistently.

He stressed that Nigeria works best when leadership is driven by compassion, competence, and courage, and urged the Federal Government to emulate Governor Zulum’s leadership qualities.

The former presidential candidate concluded by emphasizing that protecting Borno is not just a matter of politics but a matter of protecting the soul of the nation.

He urged the Federal Government to act quickly, decisively, and justly to address the crisis and ensure the safety and security of the people.
