CCSG urges UN’s SG, to sanction Nigeria for not releasing IPOB leader

Human Rights Organization, under the aegis of Congress of Civil Society Group (CCSG), has written to the Secretary -General, United Nations, Mr. Anotonio Guteries, to imposed sanction or expel Nigeria for not releasing, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from detention, after their recommendation that he should be released from prison.

According to a statement signed by Coordinator, CCSG, Abia State chapter, Comrade Damian Ogudike, with topic ; ‘UN should impose sanction or expel Nigeria for not releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’, stated that they write to draw the Secretary -General attention that UN’s committee, Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD), on April 14th, 2022, adopted a report stating Nigeria government to release Mazi Kanu who was in the detention.

He said that, the report indicted both Nigeria and Kenya governments for illegal arrest and extraordinary rendition, torture and continue detention.

Comrade Ogudike added;” The committee further gave Nigeria government six months within which they will state it’s opinion on Kanu’s matter, steps taken to comply with all the recommendation thereof. From our findings, Nigerian government did not comply to the recommendation giving by the UN’s committee.

“They flagrantly disobeyed the recommendation and this negligence to your committee resolution is creating unrest in South East, Nigeria. There is untold mayhem going on in the region now. If your office delay further to intervene, war may set in and UN will not be able to manage humanitarian crisis that will come out of it,” he stressed.

The Human Rights Activist, warned that with Nigeria population estimated to be over 200 million, if there is any break out of another civil war, the outcome will really affect the world peace.

He noted; “In the UN convention and charters, the convention gives you power to impose, sanction or outright explosion any member state who is threatening the peace of the world. The crisis going on in Nigeria has gone to that level. Please, envoke your law while there is time.

“We urge you to disregard any report from Nigeria government or any other country telling you that Nigeria government can handed the hell going on in the country, particularly in South East. Those reports are meant to deceived you and stop your action from saving the human lives in the region”, he appealed.
