Beyond Food: How MAGGI’s August Meeting brought 19,670 South-East women together

August Meeting remains a cherished tradition among women in South-East Nigeria, providing a platform for reunion, community engagement and celebration of culture.

In 2026, MAGGI took the tradition a step further, connecting with 19,670 women across the five South-East states through food, nutrition, entertainment and shared experiences. Stanley Ihedigbo reports.

For generations, August Meeting has been more than an annual gathering for women across South-East Nigeria. It has been a time to reconnect with family, strengthen community bonds, discuss issues affecting homes and society, preserve culture and celebrate the collective strength of women.

In 2026, that tradition took on another dimension as 19,670 women across the five South-East states came together through an expanded August Meeting engagement by MAGGI.

For many of the women, the experience was not simply about food or entertainment. It was about meeting old friends, sharing experiences, learning new ideas and celebrating a tradition that continues to hold an important place in the social life of communities across the region.

MAGGI partnered with 30 women’s associations and organised five market activations, more than doubling its participation compared with the previous year.

At the heart of the gatherings was something familiar to every household — food.
But beyond the cooking, the women were given opportunities to learn about practical nutrition, household meal planning and ways of making nutritious meals within the realities of family budgets.

The culinary sessions also provided a platform for women to demonstrate their cooking skills and creativity through competitions, turning familiar meals into opportunities for innovation and celebration.

For Christianna Nwibo, an executive of the Catholic Women Organization, Nwofe, Ebonyi State, the experience was memorable.

“We really enjoyed the MAGGI experience at our August Meeting. The food was delicious, the gifts were wonderful, and we had such a good time,” she said.

Her comment captured the mood of many of the gatherings, where food, music, gifts and companionship combined to create an atmosphere of celebration.

More than a meeting

August Meeting occupies a special place in the cultural calendar of many South-East communities.

Women who may have spent months apart often return to their communities during the period, making it a season of reunion and collective action.

The gatherings provide opportunities to discuss matters affecting families, support community development initiatives and strengthen relationships among women.

It was within this atmosphere that MAGGI’s 2026 engagement sought to connect with women across the region.

The brand’s activities included cooking competitions, music, gifts and appearances by South-East-born actresses Ruby Ojiakor, Blessing Obasi and Blessing Onwukwe, who brought personal connections to the culture and significance of August Meeting.

For Blessing Onwukwe, who participated in the celebrations in Enugu and Ebonyi States, the experience provided an opportunity to reconnect with a tradition that remains meaningful to the people of the region.

“Joining the 2026 August Meeting celebrations in Enugu and Ebonyi States was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed every moment and am truly glad to have had the opportunity to be part of the celebrations in both states,” she said.

When nutrition meets everyday life
While entertainment and celebration attracted attention, practical nutrition was another important part of the engagement.

Participants discussed the importance of balanced and diverse diets, micronutrients such as iron and practical ways of planning family meals.

The discussions were designed around everyday realities, particularly the challenge many families face in providing nutritious meals while managing household budgets.

Participants also learnt about the role fortified foods can play as part of a varied diet, including MAGGI products fortified with iron.

For women who often play central roles in household meal planning, such conversations provided an opportunity to connect nutrition knowledge with the realities of feeding their families.

Celebrating women at the centre

According to Funmi Osineye, Category Manager, Culinary, Nestlé Nigeria, the August Meeting represents an important expression of the influence women have within families and communities.

“August Meeting is a powerful expression of the role women play in strengthening families, preserving traditions and driving progress in their communities,” Osineye said.

She noted that the gathering also creates a space for women to learn from one another, exchange experiences and celebrate together.

For MAGGI, the 2026 engagement also carried special significance as the brand marks 60 years in Nigeria.

The anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between the brand and generations of Nigerian consumers, particularly women who have incorporated MAGGI into everyday cooking and household life.

A tradition that continues

From village meetings to modern market activations, August Meeting continues to evolve while retaining its central purpose — bringing women together.

The 2026 MAGGI experience demonstrated how food can become a bridge between generations, communities and cultures.

For the 19,670 women reached across the South-East, the experience combined familiar elements of August Meeting — food, friendship, culture and celebration — with opportunities to learn, compete, win gifts and share new ideas.

As the women returned to their homes and communities, the memories of the gatherings went with them: meals shared, recipes explored, competitions enjoyed, friendships strengthened, and traditions celebrated.

For MAGGI, the engagement represents another chapter in its six-decade relationship with Nigerian consumers.

For the women, however, it was perhaps something simpler and more personal — another opportunity to come together, celebrate who they are and remind themselves of the enduring power of community.
