Anambra Police assess security ahead of markets resumption, warn against social media fear campaigns

Anambra State Police Command has identified a deliberate pattern of coordinated social media posts aimed at inciting fear, spreading misinformation, and promoting bigotry in the wake of the full resumption of all social, commercial, and official activities in the State on Mondays.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, these misleading narratives are intended to create panic, erode public confidence, and disrupt the peace currently enjoyed in Anambra.

However, the Police commend Ndi Anambra for their vigilance, discernment, and unity, noting that residents have consistently resisted divisive narratives.

The timely sharing of credible information by the public continues to support the maintenance of law and order.

In response to these developments, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, convened an emergency closed-door meeting today, 1st February 2026, with all Area Commanders and Tactical Commanders at the Police Headquarters in Awka.

During the meeting, the CP directed the immediate intensification of intelligence-led patrols, proactive policing operations, and enhanced security surveillance to prevent any potential threat to lives and property.

The meeting was attended by officers in charge of various Joint Security Forces across the State, as well as the representative of the State Government on security matters.

The Anambra State Police Command assures the public that adequate security measures have been put in place. Residents are urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and security-conscious.

The public is advised to disregard unverified social media content and to report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest Police formation or through established emergency channels.

The Command remains fully committed to ensuring peace, public safety, and the protection of all residents and visitors to Anambra State.
