Advanced digital technologies boost LASTMA’s emergency response on Lagos roads — Bakare-Oki

General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has declared that the strategic deployment of advanced digital technologies has substantially enhanced the agency’s emergency response capacity and strengthened the safety of lives on Lagos roads.

According to the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Development, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, speaking during a comprehensive operational review over the weekend, Bakare-Oki described the integration of modern surveillance and monitoring systems as a transformative milestone in LASTMA’s institutional evolution.

He noted that the infusion of cutting-edge tools has significantly accelerated intervention timelines, improved coordination efficiency, and reduced casualty rates during road accidents and emergencies across the state.

According to him, the incorporation of surveillance drones, Traffic Management System (TMS) cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles, intelligent communication systems, body cameras, toll-free emergency hotlines, automated incident-detection platforms, and a centralized command-and-control hub has redefined the Authority’s operational framework.

He explained that, in the past, emergency response operations were often constrained by delayed incident reporting and logistical bottlenecks.

However, with real-time technological synchronization, traffic incidents are now detected almost instantly, verified through digital feeds, and promptly communicated to the nearest patrol or rescue unit for immediate action.

“Our commitment to technological modernization is anchored on the imperative to safeguard human life,” Bakare-Oki stated. “Every minute saved in emergency response is invaluable. The deployment of intelligent systems has empowered our operatives to respond with unprecedented speed, precision, and professional dexterity.”

The General Manager further disclosed that LASTMA’s Rescue Team, Monitoring and Surveillance Unit, Comptrollers, Commanders, and Zonal Heads are now equipped with mobile data terminals and integrated communication tools linked directly to the central command centre.

This digital ecosystem enables swift traffic rerouting, rapid coordination with medical and security agencies, and immediate clearance of accident debris—thereby preventing secondary crashes and minimizing prolonged congestion.

Beyond reactive interventions, Bakare-Oki revealed that the Authority has embraced predictive data analytics to strengthen proactive traffic management.

By mapping congestion patterns, identifying high-risk corridors, and tracking recurrent accident hotspots, LASTMA strategically positions operatives ahead of peak-hour surges. This anticipatory approach, he said, has played a critical role in stabilizing vehicular flow and reducing fatalities, particularly in densely populated areas of Lagos.

He emphasized that the Lagos State Government’s investment in modern digital infrastructure aligns with its broader vision of building a smart, resilient, and globally competitive megacity.

According to him, the modernization initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to institutional strengthening, public safety, and infrastructural excellence.

The digital transformation has also enhanced operational transparency and documentation accuracy.

Automated reporting platforms now generate comprehensive archival records of traffic incidents, supporting evidence-based policy formulation and continuous refinement of operational strategies.

Reiterating that effective traffic management and the preservation of human life remain central to LASTMA’s mandate, Bakare-Oki stressed that improved emergency response not only reduces injuries and fatalities but also reinforces public confidence in government institutions.

“As we consolidate these achievements, our resolve remains unwavering,” he affirmed. “We shall continue to invest in technological innovation, capacity development, and inter-agency collaboration to ensure Lagos roads remain safer, more orderly, and optimally responsive to emergencies.”
