Abiodun’s track record sparks push for Ogun East Senate seat

With the 2027 elections approaching, stakeholders in Ogun East are urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to represent the district in the Senate, reflecting widespread political backing and public approval.

The push, which has been building steadily over recent months, reached new heights and few days ago during a series of meetings held in Remo and Ijebu divisions, where party leaders, community elders, analysts and grassroots supporters openly endorsed Abiodun’s candidacy.

APC leaders from Sagamu, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, and Remo North unanimously urged Abiodun to represent Ogun East at the National Assembly.

An apex party leader from Sagamu Local Government Area, Chief Muri Awolaja, moved the motion for the endorsement, describing Abiodun as an achiever and a worthy representative of Remoland and Ogun East.

The motion was seconded by a former Chairman of Remo North Local Government Area, Dapo Odunsi.

“Governor Abiodun has proven himself as an achiever. Ogun East deserves its representation at the Senate,” he noted.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chairmen of Remo North and Ikenne local government areas, Hon. Muyiwa Sodade and Hon. Jamiu Asimi, respectively, said the people at the grassroots were ready to throw their weight behind the governor.

According to Asimi, the call for Abiodun to represent Ogun East in the Senate is a demonstration of appreciation for his performance in office and to deepen the development stride he has started.

The formal endorsement was later announced by a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Chief Kola Ogunjobi, in the presence of key APC leaders in the district, including the Ogun East APC Chairman, Chief Adeleke Adedoyin; Otunba Dapo Osho; Hon. Sikiru Awosipe; Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ola Oresanya; Special Adviser on Women Affairs, Mrs Ayotunde Lawal; SUBEB Chairman, Hon. Olalekan Ifede; and Special Adviser on Political Matters, Apagun Biyi Adeleye, among others.

Ogunjobi said the decision followed extensive deliberations and an assessment of the governor’s performance in office.

He cited infrastructural development, education reforms, security initiatives, housing projects, industrial expansion and social welfare programmes as key achievements of the Abiodun administration.

He also noted that the governor had overseen the construction of over 1,600 kilometres of roads and the completion of the Gateway International Airport, while attracting significant manufacturing investments to the state.

Party officials from Sagamu, Ikenne and Remo North local government areas pledged to mobilise support across the division to ensure victory for the APC in the senatorial district if the governor joins the race.

They maintained that Remo Division is proud of Abiodun’s record in office and resolved to champion his emergence as the party’s candidate for Ogun East in 2027.

Governor Abiodun has yet to make a formal declaration, but the mounting pressure from stakeholders suggests an announcement may be imminent. With the APC primaries approaching, his candidacy could reshape Ogun East’s political landscape and set the tone for the 2027 elections.

Also speaking, a political analyst, Bunmi Aderibigbe, speaking from Ijebu Ode, posited that Ogun East stands at a pivotal moment, and the choice before is both historic and unmistakable.

“Having observed the remarkable leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun, over nearly seven years as Governor of Ogun State, I am compelled to say that Ogun East deserves nothing less than his representation in the Senate.

“His tenure has been a masterclass in transformative governance, where industries have thrived, youth have been empowered, agriculture has flourished, and communities have been elevated.

“To deny Ogun East, this leadership would be to deny it the brightest horizon in our history,” he noted

Also, another analyst, Tayo Mabeweje, noted that since Gov Abiodun assumed office, he has steadily charted a path that is redefining governance in the Gateway State.

“From infrastructure development and economic expansion to improved governance structures and people-oriented policies, Ogun State has witnessed a transformation that is visible, measurable, and impactful. Roads are being built and rehabilitated, industries are expanding, and communities that once felt neglected are now experiencing the touch of purposeful governance.

“Indeed, the progress unfolding across the Gateway State is not hidden. It is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf.

“The people of Ogun State are not blind to the development around them. They see the roads, the investments, the economic activity, and the deliberate efforts to create a more prosperous future.

“Governance is no longer judged by rhetoric but by results—and the results are evident across the length and breadth of the state.

He added that many voices within the district are increasingly aligning around the belief that the next representation in the Senate should reflect experience, performance, and proven commitment to development.

“In that regard, the name of Prince Dapo Abiodun, widely regarded as the Gateway Pathfinder, continues to resonate strongly among the people.

“Just as the political landscape once rallied behind Bola Ahmed Tinubu, popularly known as the City Boy, in recognition of his enduring political relevance and leadership experience, many believe Ogun East could witness a similar moment of consolidation,” he noted.
