A year, five months: Over 100km of roads commissioned by Gov. Umo Eno’s administration

Since May 29, 2023, when he took office, Governor Umo Bassey Eno has made notable strides in improving Akwa Ibom State, particularly by investing strategically in Road infrastructure.

The Governor has allocated N208.16 billion to this sector, focusing on building and upgrading roadways and vital infrastructure, and has successfully commissioned more than 100 kilometers of roads along with seven bridges.

Governor Umo Eno Prioritizing infrastructure involves more than just aesthetics or practicality; it constitutes a foundational aspect of the ARISE AGENDA, playing a significant role in enhancing economic expansion, social harmony, and holistic development throughout the state.

Under Governor Eno, the development of a vast road network significantly improves connectivity across Akwa Ibom and further afield. Enhanced roadways shorten travel durations, lower transportation expenses, and promote the flow of goods and services.

This holds great importance for a state rich in natural resources and agricultural potential, since improved market access enables farmers and businesses to thrive, which in turn boosts local economies and generates job opportunities.

Governor Eno realizes that upgraded road infrastructure lures investments, thereby enhancing the likelihood of businesses starting operations in areas with strong logistical support.

Furthermore, the establishment of seven new bridges has considerably decreased the hazards faced by school children crossing rivers on their way to school.

Previously, the Ikot Eyo Bridge witnessed heartbreaking incidents of school children drowning because of a fallen wooden bridge, similar to what happened at the Nto-Amba Bridge in Obot Akara Local Government Area.

Not only do these bridges connect communities, but they also encourage social integration and togetherness. They ensure a smooth distribution of food and products, which is crucial for a varied state like Akwa Ibom.

These infrastructure projects improve residents’ quality of life by providing better access to markets, education, healthcare, and essential services.

Infrastructure investment serves as a key component of the ARISE AGENDA, with well-planned initiatives capable of increasing GDP.

The ARISE AGENDA initiative emphasizes the development of high-quality roadways, supporting global sustainability objectives and responsible governance, which establishes Akwa Ibom as a progressive state committed to the well-being of its people and the environment.

Numerous analysts have ranked Akwa Ibom State as Nigeria’s second-best for its well-planned qualitative road network, just behind the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Governor Umo Bassey Eno has made a significant investment in road and infrastructure development, which plays a crucial role in further improving Akwa Ibom State’s reputation.

Governor Eno’s administration has commissioned the following road projects: 1.1 km project on Spring Road and gully erosion; 9.76 km from Ikot Eyo to Edem Idim, then Okpot to Mbiekene, continuing to Nung Obong and finally reaching Ikot Ntung on the East-West Road.

The Mkpat Enin–Ikot Ubo–Ikot Ntot–Nkikara Road spans 10.519 km and lies within the Mkpat Enin and Ikot Abasi Local Government Areas. 60-meter span Nto Ide-Ikot Amba bridge.

The 21.5 km Oron Road extends from the Ring Road III Roundabout to the gate of Victor Attah International Airport, which has been renamed Udom Emmanuel Boulevard. 12.5 km from Ikot Ekaide to Ikot Okoro in Oruk Anam .

The 2.9 km Secretariat Road connects the communities of Urue Offong and Ibotong Eweme in the Urue Offong/Oruko Local Government Area.

The 4.5 km Ekparakwa-Obesity Road located in Oruk Anam. The road from Ikot Ekaide to Ikot Okoro and Ikot Ibritam spans 22.5 km and includes two bridges.

1.8 km Paul Ekpo Crescent, 1.0 km on Emmanuel Ekon Avenue, 0.8 kilometers on Obot Emem Street, A 1.3 km underground flood control tunnel, measuring 8 meters deep and 2x2x0.3 meters in dimensions, along with the renovated section of Atiku Abubakar Avenue featuring street lighting, and the upgraded Afaha Ube Street.

2.5 km Ifa Ikot Okpon-Anua GRA Phase 2 ,5.1 km Ikot Akpa Edung, Ikot Obio Ata, Edem Ibiok, Ekpene Ukim Roadsin Ibesikpo Asutan L.G.A.

The 3 km stretch of Ndiya Street and other internal roads feature an underground drainage system with attached toilet facilities for traders.

This remarkable accomplishment improves connectivity across the state and promotes economic growth and development. These projects will likely leave a lasting effect on the state’s infrastructure, facilitating future improvements and reflecting the governor’s commitment to public service and sustainable development as described in the ARISE AGENDA.

Approximately 34 new road projects have been launched by the Governor, covering over 250 kilometers and featuring around 14 bridges. Several of these projects have already started and are nearing completion.

Governor Umo Eno has made it a priority to allocate funds for ongoing projects, guaranteeing that every project reaches completion. This encompasses both direct labour road projects and those from the Finance and General Purpose Committee (FGPC) that previous administrations passed down, all of which are nearing full completion.

Governor Umo Eno envisions a future where his leadership creates a lasting impact in the state, ensuring that his administration stays dynamic and significant for future generations.
