Airtel suspends “Borrow Me” services, cites compliance alignment

Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, a move that affects prepaid subscribers who rely on borrowing options to stay connected between recharges.

The suspended services previously enabled eligible customers to access airtime or data on credit and repay upon their next recharge.

The offering has been widely used by subscribers seeking convenience during periods of low balance.

Despite the suspension, the telecom operator assured customers that its core services remain fully operational.

Subscribers will continue to enjoy seamless access to airtime and data purchases through established channels, including USSD, mobile apps, and retail outlets nationwide.

The company emphasized that the development is not expected to disrupt overall service delivery or impact its quality of operations across the country.

Commenting on the decision, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the move as a strategic and responsible adjustment.

“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements,” Adeshina stated. “Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

Industry observers believe the decision may be linked to regulatory or operational adjustments within the telecommunications sector, although the company did not specify the exact reasons behind the suspension.

Airtel Nigeria further reassured customers that updates regarding the status of the suspended services will be communicated in due course, leaving open the possibility of a future reinstatement once internal and external requirements are fully addressed.

The development comes at a time when telecom operators are increasingly focusing on regulatory compliance, financial discipline, and sustainable service offerings in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
