Jonathan, Kwankwaso reportedly join forces as opposition bloc targets Tinubu’s re-election

A political advocacy group, Goodluck Nigeria, has announced the formation of what it describes as a “mega opposition alliance” aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The group said the proposed alliance would bring together former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in what it believes could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.

The announcement, which has sparked widespread political discussion, was made by the Convener of Goodluck Nigeria, Emma Umerah, who said the group is working to mobilise support across the country for the proposed alliance.

According to Umerah, the coalition is being structured as a broad political movement designed to rally Nigerians seeking an alternative leadership direction in the coming electoral cycle.

“In the interest of national progress and democratic development, we are working towards building a strong coalition capable of delivering the kind of leadership Nigerians desire,” he said in a statement released on Monday.

He explained that the initiative would focus on building a nationwide grassroots network while also engaging key political stakeholders, civil society organisations and youth groups.

Umerah further disclosed that the alliance had begun consultations and had reportedly secured pledges of support and funding from individuals and political stakeholders sympathetic to the group’s objectives.

“We believe this alliance is the key to bringing about positive change and development in Nigeria. Our team is working tirelessly to ensure that Nigerians have a credible and viable alternative in the 2027 presidential election,” he stated.

The development has already generated intense political debate among analysts and party supporters, with some observers suggesting that any collaboration between Jonathan and Kwankwaso could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 race.

While neither Jonathan nor Kwankwaso has formally confirmed participation in the proposed alliance, political watchers say both figures remain influential within Nigeria’s political space and command substantial support bases across different regions of the country.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, while Kwankwaso, a former defence minister and two-term governor of Kano State, remains one of the prominent political figures in Northern Nigeria.

President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, is widely expected to seek a second term in 2027, in line with Nigeria’s constitutional provision allowing a maximum of two terms for presidents.

Political analysts say that as the next election cycle gradually approaches, political alignments, negotiations and coalition-building among opposition forces are likely to intensify.

For now, the Goodluck Nigeria initiative appears to represent one of the earliest attempts by a political advocacy group to begin shaping the conversation around potential alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
