YALI Network Lagos launches virtual book club to promote leadership, reading culture

YALI Network Lagos has launched a Virtual Book Club initiative aimed at strengthening leadership capacity and promoting a culture of reading among young professionals and emerging leaders in Lagos.

The initiative held its inaugural virtual meeting on February 11, 2026, bringing together members of the YALI Network Lagos community as well as participants from American Corner Ikeja.

The programme is designed to create a collaborative learning environment where members can engage with transformational literature, exchange ideas, and gain practical knowledge that supports leadership development, career growth, and personal advancement.

Speaking during the launch, Deputy Coordinator of YALI Network Lagos, Adeyemi Oluwabunmi, highlighted the importance of reading in shaping effective leaders and driving collective progress.

According to him, the initiative is more than just a reading platform.
“This book club is not just about reading books; it is about learning, applying knowledge, and growing together as leaders. Reading expands our perspectives and equips us with the insights needed to navigate leadership and innovation,” he said.

The Virtual Book Club will operate through a structured framework that includes a curated reading plan, bi-weekly virtual review sessions, accountability partnerships, and periodic physical meetings for deeper discussions and collaboration.

Team Lead of the Book Club, John Kamikun, explained that the initiative was designed to go beyond casual reading by building a community of disciplined learners committed to personal and professional development.

“Books are wings that allow us to fly. The question is whether we choose to use those wings. Through this book club, we are creating a platform where young leaders can learn together, grow together, and achieve meaningful impact together,” he said.

Also speaking, the Deputy Team Lead, Eniola Success Talabi, noted that accountability mechanisms would be introduced to ensure participants remain consistent and achieve measurable growth through the programme.

As part of its engagement strategy, participants will be grouped into smaller teams to encourage active participation, peer learning, and sustained interaction.

The club will also introduce “growth partners” to help members maintain discipline and commitment to their reading and development goals.

The Book Club already includes members from across Lagos as well as participants affiliated with American Corner Ikeja, strengthening collaboration between youth leadership initiatives and knowledge-sharing platforms in the state.

Organisers say the initiative reflects the continued commitment of YALI Network Lagos to empower young leaders with the knowledge, mindset, and skills required to drive social and economic transformation within their communities.

YALI Network Lagos is part of the broader Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), a United States Government programme designed to empower young Africans through leadership training, networking opportunities, and programmes that promote civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and public sector leadership.

Through its activities, the Lagos chapter continues to build a vibrant network of young leaders committed to driving positive change in the state and across Nigeria.
