MWUN loses former Vice President-General, Comrade Chris Idagbonre

Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced, with deep sorrow, the passing of Comrade Chris Eromosele Idagbonre, a former Vice President-General (VPG) of the Union, who died after a brief illness.

Comrade Idagbonre, a seasoned trade unionist and respected labour leader, served the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria with distinction for over 25 years before his glorious retirement in 2025. His death marks the end of an era for the Union and the Nigerian labour movement at large.

According to the Head of Media, MWUN, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, before his retirement, Comrade Chris rose through the ranks of the Union, beginning his illustrious labour career at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Lagos, where he was a dedicated member of the NPA Branch of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria.

Throughout his long years of service, he maintained an unblemished record marked by integrity, diligence, and unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare.

Widely regarded as a pragmatic and principled trade unionist, Comrade Idagbonre was known for his passion for labour matters, his humane disposition, and his deep concern for the wellbeing of his colleagues and Union members.

He was a committed executive member whose leadership style was anchored on dialogue, fairness, and selfless service.

The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, paid glowing tribute to the late labour leader, describing him as a dependable ally and a stabilising force within the Union.

According to Comrade Bunu, Comrade Chris was a man one could always rely on, particularly in matters of conflict resolution, owing to his calm temperament, wisdom, and ability to foster unity even in difficult moments.

“Comrade Chris Idagbonre was not only a loyal and dedicated Union man, but also a bridge-builder whose contributions to industrial harmony and organisational growth will remain indelible,” the President-General noted.

The Union described his passing as a painful loss, not only to MWUN but to the entire maritime and labour community in Nigeria, stating that his legacy of service, humility, and commitment to justice will continue to inspire future generations of trade unionists.

Funeral arrangements, the Union disclosed, will be announced later by his immediate family.

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria prays that the gentle soul of Comrade Chris Eromosele Idagbonre rests in perfect peace.
