President Tinubu pays tribute to former President Buhari, declares 7-day mourning

Nigeria is in mourning after the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement, described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” whose legacy of service and sacrifice endures.

Tinubu noted that Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

During his tenure, Buhari championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.

Tinubu has directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today as a mark of respect to the former leader.

An emergency Federal Executive Council session will also be held on Tuesday to honor Buhari’s memory.

The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honors befitting his towering contributions to the country.

Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul, saying, “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.

And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”

Peter Obi, another prominent Nigerian leader, also paid tribute to Buhari, describing his passing as a solemn moment for the nation.

Obi extended his deepest condolences to Buhari’s family and prayed that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and reward his efforts in service to the nation.

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has expressed profound shock and deep sorrow at Buhari’s passing.

The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, issued a message on Sunday, signing it personally and sharing it with journalists.
