2027 Presidency: Goodluck Nigeria endorses Goodluck Jonathan for national rescue

Goodluck Nigeria has proposed that Jonathan should serve only a single four-year term aimed at stabilising the country and reversing what it described as years of economic decline and worsening insecurity.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, the leader of the group, Emma Umerah, said Nigeria’s current economic and security realities require an experienced hand capable of restoring confidence and rebuilding critical national institutions within a short period.

According to him, the country’s economic situation has deteriorated sharply over the years, pointing to the massive depreciation of the naira as evidence of deeper structural challenges confronting the nation.

He noted that during Jonathan’s administration, the naira exchanged at about ₦160 to one dollar, compared to the present realities, which, according to him, have inflicted severe hardship on ordinary Nigerians.

“When Goodluck was in power, things were relatively stable and affordable. He demonstrated statesmanship by conceding defeat even before the final announcement in 2015. That is the kind of leadership Nigeria needs again,” Umerah said.

He maintained that the group was not merely interested in politics but in what it called a national rescue mission designed to reset governance, strengthen institutions and restore economic stability.

“What we have now is hardship. We are asking him to return and offer four years of good leadership to reset what we describe as years of decline,” he added.

Umerah also hailed the recent court ruling affirming that Jonathan remains constitutionally eligible to contest the presidential election, describing the judgment as a victory for democracy and constitutional interpretation.

According to him, the ruling has further strengthened the group’s conviction that the former president can legitimately return to office and help reposition the country.

“The court has made it clear that President Jonathan can contest again, and we welcome that judgment wholeheartedly. Nigerians need him more now than ever before,” he stated.
The group disclosed that Jonathan has been given until May 29, 2026, to decide whether or not he will contest the presidency in 2027.

According to Umerah, if the former president chooses not to run, the group expects him to endorse a credible candidate who would publicly commit to serving only one term of four years.

“We respect the Constitution and the judiciary, but Nigerians deserve competent leadership by 2027 — whether through Jonathan himself or through a candidate he supports,” he stated.

The advocacy group also claimed to command a nationwide membership strength of about 10 million supporters who, it said, would back only a candidate endorsed by Jonathan under the proposed one-term arrangement.

“Our position is clear: if he won’t run, he should anoint someone who will. That person must also sign a commitment to serve only four years,” Umerah stressed.

The group expressed confidence that significant reforms could be achieved within a single presidential term, including stabilising the naira, improving national security, ensuring stable electricity supply and conducting credible elections.

“We believe four years is enough to turn things around, crash the dollar, tackle insecurity, provide stable power and strengthen democratic institutions before leaving office,” he added.

The call is coming amid growing political consultations, alignments and permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political actors and interest groups continue to debate the future direction of the country and the kind of leadership required to address Nigeria’s mounting challenges.
