Thrivescape urges emergency management agencies to leverage education, youth engagement for a disaster-free future

In commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2024, Thrivescape Initiative urged relevant government agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agencies, Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), Fire Service, and Security Agencies, to harness the power of education and youth engagement in shaping a disaster-resilient future for Nigeria’s youth.

They noted that disasters in Nigeria have largely been man-made, while major natural disasters like flooding could be mitigated with adequate mitigation plans.

According to the group’s acting Team Lead, Oluwatosin Ayodele,  as climate change intensifies, the frequency and severity of disasters have increased, further endangering lives, property, and livelihoods.

“We commend NiMET and NEMA for early warnings but accessibility of the information to underserved populations can be daunting. We must build a community of empowered youth to disseminate critical information to underserved communities that have limited access to disaster preparedness knowledge.

“Education should extend beyond early warnings. Preparedness mechanisms, evacuation plans, shelter locations, and relief and recovery processes must be accessible to all Nigerians, particularly those in underserved communities. Many Nigerians in underserved communities are unaware of the devastating impacts of disasters and the ways to mitigate them. By leveraging public education campaigns and increasing youth involvement, we can bridge this gap and create a safer, more informed population”, he stressed.

He further said that Thrivescape also leverages the medium to urge the government to ensure maximum representation of young persons and youth-led organizations in their events, to keep them abreast of developments and to create opportunities for young people to take initiatives capable of transforming disaster management in Nigeria.

“Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015 – 2030) provides a global roadmap for reducing the loss of lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems. To achieve its ambitious targets, strong youth engagement, public enlightenment and a comprehensive action plan are essential.

“Thrivescape Initiative remains committed to a livable and sustainable future for all Nigerians”, he stated.
