Thrivescape Initiative sensitizes over 350 students of Ipaja Junior College, Lagos on waste-free

In commemoration of the 2024 World Cleanup Day, Thrivescape Initiative, a non governmental organization that advocates for climate-responsive cities and communities, has sensitized over 350 students of Ipaja Junior College, Lagos on waste -free.

The group organized a sensitization session with theme;’ Tackling arctic and marine litter,’ at Ipaja Junior College, Lagos, empowering the students to join the movement for a cleaner and healthier Lagos State and  Nigeria at large.

The facilitators, Ms. Tosin Aniramu and Mr. Oyeleke Emmanuel, on  short talk session, educated students on practical steps to reduce improper waste disposal.

They explained that Lagos’ status as a coastal city and the harmful effects of waste dumped in drainages, water bodies, and canals on marine life and the blue economy.

The students were introduced to the 4R and U waste management principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Upcycle.

They were also encouraged to actively practice these principles to transform waste management in their communities.

During the feedback session, students expressed a clearer understanding of the importance of maintaining a clean environment by reducing waste, using reusable materials, and properly disposing of waste for recycling.

The event concluded on a high note with the students singing the popular song, “Imototo lo le segun arun gbogbo”(“Cleanliness Defeats All Diseases”), reinforcing the message that adolescents have a key role in promoting cleaner, healthier cities.
