Thrivescape Initiative pushes for more inclusive, equitable Nigeria

Thrivescape Initiative has urged government institutions, civil society, and community leaders to intensify efforts toward building a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria, emphasizing that meaningful national progress can only be achieved when every citizen is given equal opportunities to participate and thrive.

The group joined the global community in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

This year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” highlights that inclusion is the foundation of sustainable development, social cohesion, and human dignity.

According to Aniramu Tosin, persons with disabilities remain among the most marginalised in society.

Many continue to face stigma and barriers that limit their access to health services, education, transportation, and employment.

These barriers deepen poverty, restrict participation, and affect overall well-being.

At Thrivescape, the belief is that a society is only as strong as its ability to include every person.

The organisation works to advance inclusive infrastructure, community resilience, and equitable opportunities so that everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.

Its programmes support both communities and institutions to adopt practices that are responsive, accessible, and centred on the lived experiences of persons with disabilities.

The group draws inspiration from global and national commitments such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2019. Both affirm the right of every person to the highest attainable standard of health and well-being without discrimination.

These principles guide its work in promoting inclusive planning, disability-friendly infrastructure, and equal access to opportunities.

As the organisation commemorated this day, it called on government actors, development partners, and community leaders to move from commitment to action. Policies, programmes, and built environments, it stressed, must be designed in consultation with persons with disabilities.

Their voices and knowledge are essential for building systems that support dignity, independence, and participation.
