Tears, fear, displacement as suspected Boko Haram attack ravages Pissa Community in Niger

Fear, grief and uncertainty have gripped residents of the Pissa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State following a suspected Boko Haram attack that reportedly left several people dead, destroyed homes and forced hundreds of residents to flee for safety.

The attack, which reportedly occurred on Friday, June 13, 2026, turned what began as an ordinary morning into a horrifying experience for residents, as suspected insurgents invaded the community and unleashed violence that lasted for several hours.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the community at about 8:00 a.m. and continued their assault until around 11:00 a.m., leaving behind a trail of destruction and devastation.

Residents who witnessed the incident said several people were killed during the attack, while homes and other properties were reportedly set ablaze.

A distressed resident, speaking in a video circulating on social media, gave an emotional account of the incident, saying the community had been devastated by the attackers.

“They have finished Pissa. They came this morning from eight o’clock till eleven. They finished that community. Dead bodies everywhere. The Air Force came around 10:30 a.m.,” the resident said.

The video reportedly shows thick clouds of smoke rising from burning buildings, while frightened residents, including women, children and elderly people, are seen fleeing the community in search of safety.

Other images said to have been taken after the attack reportedly showed the bodies of some of the victims of the violence, further highlighting the scale of the devastation suffered by the community.

The incident has reportedly triggered a fresh wave of displacement, with families abandoning their homes and fleeing to safer locations.

Many residents are said to have sought refuge in neighbouring communities, including Kabi, also in Borgu Local Government Area, amid growing concerns over the security situation in the area.

Survivors and community members have expressed frustration over what they described as inadequate security measures, claiming that the attack was preceded by threats and warnings.

According to them, the situation has raised fears that other communities in the area could also come under attack if urgent steps are not taken by the government and security agencies.

The survivors also lamented the timing of the military response, saying that although military aircraft were reportedly sighted in the area during the attack, the intervention came after the attackers had already carried out their operation and fled.

The alleged delay has heightened concerns among residents who are now demanding stronger and more proactive security measures to protect vulnerable communities in the region.

For families affected by the attack, the consequences extend far beyond the immediate loss of lives.

Homes have reportedly been destroyed, livelihoods disrupted, and families separated in the confusion that followed the violence. Children and elderly people are among those said to have been displaced, while many residents have been left without adequate shelter, food and other necessities.

The attack has also deepened the sense of vulnerability among communities in the area, with residents living in fear of possible further attacks.

Community members are now appealing to the Federal Government, the Niger State Government and security agencies to urgently strengthen security in Pissa and surrounding communities to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

They are also calling for immediate humanitarian intervention to provide displaced families with food, shelter, medical assistance and other essential supplies.

Residents stressed that the displaced victims cannot be left to cope with the aftermath of the attack on their own, particularly as many have lost their homes and sources of livelihood.

The incident comes amid continuing concerns over insecurity and the activities of armed groups in parts of northern Nigeria, where rural communities have often borne the brunt of attacks, displacement and destruction.

As survivors continue to mourn their loved ones and assess the extent of the damage, the people of Pissa are left to confront the painful reality of rebuilding their lives after the attack.

For many of them, the urgent priority is not only to recover what has been lost but to regain the confidence that they can return home and live without fear.

The affected communities are therefore calling for sustained security operations, improved intelligence gathering and a stronger presence of security personnel to protect residents and prevent armed groups from exploiting vulnerable communities.

They are also urging the authorities to investigate the attack, establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

For the displaced families, however, the immediate concern remains survival.
With homes reportedly reduced to ashes, families separated and loved ones lost, the people of Pissa are appealing for help as they struggle to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.

“They have finished Pissa,” the distressed resident said in the video.

For the survivors, those words now represent the scale of the tragedy confronting their community—and the urgent need for protection, justice and humanitarian assistance.
