President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, courage, discipline and dedicated service to Nigeria.

In a statement issued from the State House on Saturday, President Tinubu expressed immense joy over the centenary celebration of the respected Yoruba leader, noting that Pa Fasoranti’s life and contributions to national development remain worthy of honour and celebration.

The President said Baba Fasoranti had distinguished himself through his disciplined lifestyle, strong moral principles and commitment to noble causes, adding that his life represents honesty, integrity and exemplary leadership.

Tinubu praised the elder statesman’s passion for education, recalling his academic achievements, including studies at the University College, Ibadan, now the University of Ibadan, the University of Hull, and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.

According to the President, Pa Fasoranti left enduring footprints in the education sector through his years as a teacher and the establishment of schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.

Tinubu also highlighted Fasoranti’s contributions to politics and democratic struggles in Nigeria, describing him as one of the last surviving disciples of late nationalist leader, Obafemi Awolowo.

He noted that the elder statesman was active in the defunct Action Group during the First Republic and later became a member of the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.

The President recalled that between 1979 and 1983, Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin, where his integrity and financial prudence helped in managing the state’s finances effectively.

Tinubu further praised the Afenifere leader for his courageous role during the military era, saying Pa Fasoranti became one of the prominent voices against military dictatorship and strongly advocated for the return of democracy.

According to him, Fasoranti emerged as a rallying point for Yoruba unity, solidarity and development, especially during challenging periods in the nation’s political history.

The President said after the death of Abraham Adesanya, Pa Fasoranti became the widely recognised leader of Afenifere, maintaining a respected and influential voice within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation.

Tinubu also reflected on the personal tragedies and challenges the elder statesman had endured over the years, including an assassination attempt during the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha, the death of his wife in 1991, and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019.

Despite the painful experiences, the President said Pa Fasoranti remained resilient and steadfast.

The President further expressed gratitude to the nonagenarian for his prayers and support throughout his political journey, especially during the 2023 presidential campaign.

Tinubu recalled visiting Pa Fasoranti in Akure before the election, where the elder statesman prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would live to witness Tinubu becoming President of Nigeria.

“God answered his prayer through my victory and eventual ascendancy to the top office,” Tinubu stated.

He thanked the elder statesman for believing in his vision and for his continued support for the Renewed Hope Administration.

President Tinubu concluded by praying for God to grant Pa Fasoranti many more years in good health, while appreciating his immense service and contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and national development.
