Ondo-born activist Omoyele Sowore strengthens ties with Wesley University Ondo

Ondo-born activist Omoyele Sowore paid a courtesy visit to Wesley University in Ondo State, strengthening ties between the renowned activist and the academic community.

The visit was focused on celebrating academic growth, encouraging institutional leadership, and fostering intellectual engagement, free from political bias or sentiment.

While addressing the University community, Mr. Sowore lamented the current state of many Nigerian universities, describing them as environments overtaken by partisanship rather than open intellectual discourse. He stated that the university system is no longer fertile ground for open-mindedness and critical thinking, as many educational leaders in the country today are not adequately prepared or qualified for the roles they occupy.

In contrast, Sowore praised the leadership of Wesley University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Rt. Rev.) Samuel Sunday Obeka, describing him as “exceptional and well-prepared.”

According to him, “Professor Obeka is a qualified and visionary man who has truly prepared himself for the role of Vice-Chancellor.”

The Vice-Chancellor, in his remarks, appreciated Mr. Sowore’s visit and emphasized that Wesley University is committed to moving beyond its current standing through innovation, infrastructural development, and academic excellence.

“We assure you that we will continue to do our best to ensure that this University grows and stands tall among its peers,” he stated.

Mr. Sowore also expressed his admiration for the University’s calm and progressive atmosphere, noting that it was the first time he would be in a university senate chamber.

“This is the first time I will appear in a Senate Chamber of a university that is peaceful, progressive, and truly democratic where I feel happy and safe.”

He encouraged the University’s management to continue investing in its students, who he described as future leaders and presidents, urging them to lead with magnanimity and humanity as they shape the next generation.

The visit ended with a warm reception, as Mr. Sowore was introduced to members of staff and students during the visit.
