Nigerian Army debunks claims of French Military base in Maiduguri

Nigerian Army has dismissed claims of a French military base in Maiduguri, North East Nigeria.
According to a statement by Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Captain Reuben Kovangiya, the claims made by social media activist Mahdi Shehu are baseless, deceptive, and a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation.
The Army explained that a video shared by Shehu, which purportedly showed the establishment of a French military base, was a clip of the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, Brigadier General Abubakar Haruna, addressing the press alongside a member of the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT).
The event occurred on October 25, 2024, at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, during the handover of equipment donated to Operation Hadin Kai by BMATT.
The Army emphasized its longstanding partnership with BMATT, which has provided significant support, including training programs and Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) equipment.
