Nigeria Police reaffirms commitment to community policing as AIG visits Oba of Lagos

Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community-oriented policing as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom, paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, at his palace, where both leaders underscored the importance of collaboration between security agencies and traditional institutions in sustaining peace and public safety.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, FCID Annex, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, ASP Mayegun Aminat, the visit, described as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation, underscored the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to deepening collaboration with traditional rulers in the promotion of peace, security, and community development across the country.

Speaking during the visit, AIG Akpanudom emphasized the importance of drawing from the wealth of experience, wisdom, and cultural insight of traditional institutions, noting that such engagement remains essential to effective policing and improved service delivery.

He explained that the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, remains committed to a people-centred and community-oriented policing model designed to strengthen trust between law enforcement agencies and the public.

According to him, traditional rulers continue to play a critical role in maintaining peace within their domains, mediating disputes, preserving cultural values, and supporting security agencies in intelligence gathering and conflict prevention.

The AIG further stressed that understanding local customs and traditions is fundamental to effective policing, adding that officers must operate with sensitivity, respect, and strong community engagement.

He also noted that the era of mistrust between the police and the public is gradually giving way to a more collaborative approach, where both parties work together as partners in ensuring safety and security for all citizens.

“A policing system that is detached from the people cannot succeed,” he noted, reaffirming that the Force remains committed to building trust-based relationships that enhance security outcomes nationwide.

AIG Akpanudom also expressed appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality extended to him and his entourage by the Oba of Lagos, while praying for continued peace, stability, and prosperity in the kingdom and across Nigeria.

In his response, Oba Rilwan Akiolu commended the Nigeria Police Force for its efforts in maintaining law and order, particularly in Lagos State, which remains one of the most complex security environments in the country.

The monarch urged the AIG and officers under his command to remain steadfast, disciplined, and fair in the discharge of their duties. He described policing as a noble responsibility that requires integrity, patience, and compassion in dealing with citizens.

Oba Akiolu further encouraged sustained collaboration between security agencies and traditional institutions, noting that peace and development can only thrive where there is mutual respect and cooperation.

The royal father also reaffirmed his support for initiatives aimed at strengthening community safety and intelligence-driven policing.

The visit concluded with the presentation of a commemorative plaque to His Royal Majesty as a symbol of goodwill and continued partnership between the Nigeria Police Force and the traditional institution.
