Niger State Government directed closure of IBBU over security concerns

Niger State Government has directed the shutdown of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) in Lapai with immediate effect due to recent security breaches and loss of lives within the university community.

According to the Secretary to the State Government, Niger State, Abubakar Usman, the decision was announced by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago in an official statement.

It stated that recent incidents of insecurity on campus, including the killing of a 300-level student by suspected phone thieves, have raised concerns about the safety of students and staff.

The government is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and is working to address the situation swiftly.

The safety and security of all citizens, including students, remain a top priority for the government.

The university has been closed down until further notice to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The government is working to investigate the security breaches and bring perpetrators to justice.

Also, the government plans to deploy over 200 trained local vigilantes to patrol areas heavily populated by students and establish official checkpoints to deter criminal activities

Students will be required to carry valid identification cards to help distinguish them from intruders.
