League of Women Voters advocates for gender balance in Nigerian politics

In a renewed drive for inclusive governance, the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Lagos Chapter, Kosofe Constituency, has stepped up its advocacy for the passage of the Special Seats for Women Bill, a legislative effort aimed at increasing female representation in Nigeria’s political system.

The advocacy, led by the convener Abiodun Oshiga, brought together members of the League in a peaceful and well-organized campaign within the Kosofe Constituency. During the event, the group formally presented a document supporting the bill, emphasizing the need to amplify women’s voices in political decision-making, particularly in Lagos State.

Oshiga stressed that equitable female participation is essential for sustainable development, arguing that governance that excludes women is incomplete.

“This initiative is not just about numbers; it is about ensuring women’s perspectives and priorities are fully represented in leadership positions,” she said.

The League expressed appreciation to key supporters, notably Hon. Adetola Adunni Abubakar, Chairperson of NILOWV Lagos Chapter, and Mrs. Asemota Lauretta, Vice Chairperson, for their unwavering commitment to advancing women’s political inclusion.

The peaceful demonstration underscores a broader national movement to correct historical gender imbalances in politics, sending a clear message that Nigerian women are determined to secure a stronger presence and meaningful influence in governance.

Through their advocacy, NILOWV members hope the bill will be enacted swiftly, providing a concrete pathway for greater female representation and empowering women to shape Nigeria’s political future.
