LASTMA, Firefighters prevent catastrophe after gas tanker leak sparks fire

A major fire disaster was narrowly avoided on Friday after a six-tyre mini gas tanker developed a mechanical fault and caught fire at the Owode Elede corridor inward Ikorodu, Lagos.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the tanker suffered a mechanical failure while in transit.

During emergency assessment by responders, officials discovered a leakage of compressed gas, which subsequently ignited and triggered a fire around the vehicle.

The statement disclosed that LASTMA’s Rescue and Recovery Team immediately mobilised to the scene alongside personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Their coordinated and professional response ensured that the fire was quickly brought under control before it could spread into a major inferno capable of threatening lives, destroying property and damaging critical road infrastructure.

To prevent gridlock while emergency operations were underway, LASTMA operatives introduced traffic diversion measures by opening an alternative passage, using one serviceable lane together with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor to maintain the steady movement of vehicles.

As a result of the intervention, traffic along the busy Ikorodu Road axis remained largely free-flowing despite the emergency situation.

The General Manager of LASTMA commended the prompt response and effective collaboration between the agency and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, describing the coordinated operation as crucial in preventing what could have been a catastrophic incident.

He also urged motorists to remain vigilant, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with emergency responders whenever incidents occur on the road to ensure public safety and facilitate rescue operations.

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across Lagos State through efficient traffic management and rapid emergency response, assuring residents that it will continue to work closely with other emergency agencies to ensure the safety and smooth movement of road users throughout the state.
