LASG mourns tragic loss of LASTMA officer, two others in Badagry accident

Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of one of its officers and two other citizens in a devastating road accident that occurred on Monday, 23 February 2026, at the Badagry Roundabout inward Seme.

According to the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Development, LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the incident involved a fully loaded SHACMAN truck, owned by the Dangote Group, which reportedly suffered a catastrophic brake failure while travelling at high speed.

The driver lost control, striking a LASTMA officer performing traffic duties and a pedestrian at the roundabout.

The truck continued its path, tragically taking another life before coming to a stop approximately 200 meters away.

The driver initially fled the scene but was later apprehended by LASTMA personnel and handed over to the Police.

Emergency response teams, including LASTMA officers, the Badagry Police Division, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Defence Corps, and concerned citizens, rushed to the scene. The victims were transported to the General Hospital, Badagry, where they were pronounced dead.

General Manager, LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as heartbreaking and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The LASTMA officer who lost his life was a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of Lagos. We honour his courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to his duty,” he said.

He further urged transport and logistics companies to prioritise vehicle safety, highlighting the critical need for regular maintenance, particularly of braking systems, to prevent similar tragedies.

The accident vehicle has been impounded and handed over to the Badagry Police Division for forensic investigation. LASTMA has assured the public that it will work with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served and road safety regulations are strengthened across Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to enhancing monitoring frameworks, emergency response capabilities, and public awareness campaigns to prevent future road accidents.

This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the daily risks faced by traffic management personnel and the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring the safety of all road users.
