IGP Disu never ordered Police to shoot illegal firearms carriers – Force

Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered officers to shoot anyone found carrying illegal firearms, insisting that no such directive was issued.

The Force described the reports as false and misleading, clarifying that the IGP merely reiterated existing laws governing the lawful use of firearms by police officers and urged personnel to act strictly within the provisions of Force Order 237 while tackling violent crimes.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Police Headquarters explained that the Inspector-General made no such directive during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Makurdi, Benue State.

According to the statement, the IGP’s comments were taken out of context and incorrectly presented to the public, creating a false impression that he had issued a “shoot-on-sight” order.

The Police explained that, during his address, the Inspector-General reminded officers that only duly authorised security personnel are legally permitted to carry firearms. He also highlighted the increasing proliferation of illegal weapons, noting that such firearms are frequently used by criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult-related violence, and other serious crimes across the country.

The Force further clarified that the Inspector-General reiterated the provisions of Force Order 237, which governs the lawful use of firearms by police officers while carrying out official duties.

He stressed that officers must always operate within the confines of the law and adhere strictly to established rules governing the use of force.

The statement emphasised that at no point did the Inspector-General instruct officers to shoot individuals merely for being found in possession of illegal firearms.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights, the Nigeria Police Force stated that its personnel are expected to perform their duties in accordance with the Constitution, relevant laws, and internationally accepted standards of policing.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting the lives and rights of all Nigerians while carrying out its constitutional responsibilities professionally, fairly, and within the limits of the law,” the statement noted.

The Force also appealed to media organisations and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing reports on security matters, warning that misinformation could create unnecessary panic, mislead the public, and erode confidence in security institutions.

The statement reiterated the Force’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians through lawful, professional, and responsible policing.
