Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly debunked allegations made by Kwara South Senator, Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, branding the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as Nigeria’s most corrupt and compromised government agency.
At a press conference on Wednesday, HURIWA described the senator’s accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, expressed dismay at the senator’s comments, questioning how a legislator could make sweeping allegations without presenting concrete evidence.
According to HURIWA, Senator Ashiru’s remarks lack credibility, driven by sentiments and possible ulterior motives.
“It’s alarming that a lawmaker would make such reckless allegations against one of Nigeria’s most hardworking agencies,” Onwubiko stated.
HURIWA emphasized the NDLEA’s unprecedented success in its war against narcotics and drug trafficking under Brigadier General Buba Marwa’s leadership.
The agency has made significant strides in arresting drug barons, prosecuting high-profile individuals, and strengthening Nigeria’s international standing.
Comrade Onwubiko pointed out that NDLEA’s successes have rattled powerful individuals, who may be resorting to political maneuvers to destabilize the agency.
He argued that the proposed bill to establish a National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation appears to be a coordinated effort to undermine NDLEA’s accomplishments.
HURIWA cited Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s warning that drug barons and internet scammers have infiltrated politics.
Governor Soludo stated, “Many drug barons see politics as the next easy alternative. Appointment or election into public office is seen largely as an opportunity to ‘eat’ rather than a call to selfless service.”
HURIWA opposes the establishment of a new drug-related agency, arguing it would be a needless duplication of functions.
“The NDLEA already has effective departments dedicated to drug awareness and rehabilitation. Creating another agency would weaken the NDLEA’s capacity and destabilize its operations.”
HURIWA calls on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the motivations behind the proposed bill and its sponsors.
The organization urges the National Assembly to act responsibly and ensure bills serve the nation’s best interests.
“HURIWA remains resolute in its defense of the NDLEA and urges the government to dismiss Senator Ashiru’s baseless accusations,” Onwubiko concluded.
