Gallaudet University USA partners Wesley University to promote, girls, special people’s education

Gallaudet University Washington, United States of America, has partnered with Wesley University Ondo to promote girls’ and special people’s education in Nigeria.

The partnership is aimed at empowering Nigerian women and special people education through education and this was emphasized during the signing of the renewal of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two universities in Lagos recently.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of Wesley University Ondo, Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel Sunday Obeka said in endeavour to foster international collaboration and academic advancement in empowering Nigerian women and special people’s education, they are renewing their partnership with the United States of America University, Gallaudet University Washington.

He noted that the renewal of the 5-year MOU signifies a continued commitment to deepening their partnership and exploring new avenues for cooperation in various academic and research endeavors.

The Methodist Church Nigeria Bishop further said that the collaborations would enrich their academic programs, foster student and faculty exchanges, engage in joint research projects, and contribute to the global advancement of knowledge and innovation in Nigeria.

He commended the University for having faith in them and emphasized that the partnership marks a significant milestone in the enduring relationship between the institutions.

“The development would also reinforce their shared values of excellence, diversity, and inclusivity in higher education. It underscores our dedication to nurturing a global learning environment that transcends geographical boundaries and promotes the free exchange of ideas, expertise, and cultural understanding,” he stressed.

The Provost of Gallaudet University Washington, Prof Khadijat Rashid, also commended the Nigeria University for their commitment to sustaining their relationship and assured that the second phase of the partnership would be collaboration and mutual growth between the two institutions.

Gallaudet University has been the educational, political, social, and economic engine of the deaf and signing community on a national and global scale for more than 150 years.

It began in 1816 when Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet crossed the Atlantic from Paris, France, to the United States with a dream to open the country’s first school for deaf education. Then, in 1864, with the support of Congress and President Abraham Lincoln, they extended their vision by founding Gallaudet University.

Gallaudet soon became a beacon for visual learning, visual language, social justice, and full rights for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Since then, Gallaudet has grown to become a university that is beyond our founder’s wildest dreams.
