FENRAD laments alleged diversion of public funds, says governance has failed Abians

Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has expressed profound concern over the entrenched culture of financial impropriety, executive recklessness, and systematic diversion of public funds that has defined governance in Abia State from 1999 to date.

According to the Executive Director, FENRAD, as the 2027 general elections approach, Abia State remains a tragic example of how democratic governance can be undermined by persistent abuse of public office.

For over two decades, successive administrations have presided over a pattern of opaque financial practices, weak budgetary discipline, and reckless executive decisions, leaving the state economically strained and developmentally stagnant.

Despite receiving billions of naira in federal allocations, internally generated revenue, loans, and intervention funds, Abia State continues to suffer from; grossly abandoned or inflated public projects, decaying infrastructure and impassable roads, underfunded healthcare and education systems, pension & gratuity arrears, and poor service delivery across critical sectors.

FENRAD observed that these failures are not accidental but are linked to systemic diversion and misapplication of public resources, often executed with little regard for due process, transparency, or long-term public interest.

Executive recklessness—manifested through unaccountable spending, excessive borrowing, and disregard for fiscal responsibility laws—has further deepened the state’s governance crisis.

The story of Abia since 1999 is one of public wealth captured by a few, while the majority suffer worsening living conditions.

Financial impropriety and executive recklessness have eroded public trust and weakened institutions meant to protect the common good.

These practices constitute a gross violation of the socio-economic rights of Abia citizens, denying them access to basic services and sustainable development, as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights frameworks.

FENRAD stressed that 2027 must represent a decisive break from the past.

Abia State urgently requires leadership committed to, financial transparency and prudent resource management, accountability in executive decision-making, Strict adherence to public procurement and fiscal responsibility laws and citizen-focused development and service delivery.

We call on anti-corruption agencies, financial oversight bodies, and relevant authorities to intensify audits, investigations, and recovery of diverted public funds in Abia State, without fear or favor.

FENRAD also urged Abia citizens, civil society, the media, professional bodies, and the youth to remain vigilant, engaged, and resolute in demanding accountability, credible leadership, and governance that truly serves the people.
