FCT to transform abandoned Life Camp Park into World-Class Leisure Centre – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to transform the abandoned recreational garden at the Life Camp Roundabout into a modern leisure and sporting hub, as part of the FCT Administration’s commitment to expanding recreational infrastructure and creating more green spaces for Abuja residents.

The decision follows the successful remodelling of the Abuja City Gate, which has become one of the capital city’s most visited recreational landmarks since it was commissioned during activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

The City Gate project recently earned the FCT Administration an award and commendation from the Office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Green Nigeria Challenge, in recognition of its contribution to environmental sustainability and urban beautification.

Speaking after inspecting the abandoned Life Camp recreation garden on Monday, Wike said the recognition from the First Lady had strengthened the administration’s resolve to invest in additional recreational facilities that would enhance the well-being of residents.

According to him, the award was a clear endorsement of the administration’s efforts to restore Abuja’s environmental aesthetics and create public spaces where residents could relax and interact.

He recalled that the transformation of the Abuja City Gate was inspired by the First Lady’s vision of making the entrance to the nation’s capital comparable to those of major cities around the world.

Wike noted that since the City Gate was commissioned, it has become a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors throughout the day and night for relaxation, recreation and photography.

He said the success of the project had demonstrated the importance of investing in well-designed public spaces, adding that the latest recognition would encourage the administration to continue implementing the ideals of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

The minister expressed disappointment over the neglect of the Life Camp Recreation Park by previous administrations, describing the facility as a valuable public asset that had been abandoned despite its enormous potential.

He said governments had overlooked the importance of preserving parks and recreational centres where families and residents could unwind outside their homes and neighbourhoods.

Wike disclosed that the FCT Administration plans to completely redesign the park and equip it with modern sporting and recreational facilities that will cater to people of all ages.

He explained that the proposed redevelopment would provide spaces for daily exercise, relaxation, sightseeing and photography, while creating an environment comparable to leisure parks in advanced countries.

To ensure the project begins without delay, the minister directed the Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA) to immediately commence work on a new design for the facility, stressing that the redevelopment would be treated as an emergency project.

He said the administration would fast-track the approval process to ensure residents begin to enjoy the benefits of the project as quickly as possible.

Wike also unveiled plans to introduce an annual New Year fireworks celebration at the Abuja City Gate beginning this year, describing the initiative as part of efforts to align Abuja with other major world capitals that usher in the New Year with spectacular public displays.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would become a major attraction capable of boosting tourism and enhancing the city’s global image.

Commending the natural landscape of the Life Camp site, Wike said its unique topography presents an opportunity to develop one of the finest recreational parks in the country.

He assured residents that only reputable firms would be considered for the project, explaining that multiple design proposals would be evaluated before the contract is awarded to guarantee the highest quality and international standards.

The minister reiterated that the President Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to improving the quality of life of Nigerians by investing in infrastructure that promotes environmental sustainability, recreation and social well-being.

The planned redevelopment of the Life Camp Recreation Park is expected to further strengthen the FCT Administration’s ongoing urban renewal programme, expand access to green spaces and provide residents with modern recreational facilities that meet global standards.
