Executive Secretary restates NMEC’s commitment to ending illiteracy in Nigeria

Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), Prof. Musa Garba Maitasfir, has reaffirmed the commission’s unwavering commitment to tackling illiteracy across Nigeria, emphasizing its role in promoting education for all.

Prof. Maitafsir disclosed this at the weekend when he led a high-powered delegation of the commission on a visit to the Aco community in Lugbe, a sprawling area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This is contained in a statement signed by Barr. Issa Marughu, Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations, issued to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday.

Prof. Maitafsir said that the epochal visit was part of the commission’s practical approaches to roundly combat illiteracy in Nigeria and bolster the achievement of its vote mandate.

The NMEC boss said that the visit was a serious wake-up call for the commission to move quickly into the community on a rescue mission, as well as other parts of the country

Prof. Maitafsir further stated that from his interactions with the residents of the community and its adjoining neighbours, none of them is educated.

He, however, pointed out that he had observed the burning desire among them to learn, stating,” This is where NMEC comes in.

“The commission will not only provide the necessary learning materials for them, but staffers will be sent there for this all-important assignment.”

The Executive Secretary further emphasized that educating the residents of the community and their neighbours will serve as a litmus test for the commission’s new approach to tackling illiteracy.

Prof. Maitafsir urged the members of staff of the commission living within the various communities to brace up for this urgent mission, which is to take off very soon.
