Dangote Petroleum Refinery: A continent-building vision, says MD, David Bird

Dangote Petroleum Refinery is more than just an industrial marvel; it is a transformative project poised to redefine Africa’s energy landscape.

Speaking during a journalists’ tour to the organization’s facilities, at Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Bird described the refinery as a “continent-building” endeavour, explained its role in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel, boosting domestic production, and positioning the country as a key player in global energy markets.

Bird, who recently completed his six-month probation at the refinery, shared insights from his 21-year career with Shell, where he worked across nine countries in downstream oil and gas operations, including supply, trading, and Greenfield projects.

Following a stint as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a midstream oil and gas company and a leadership role in Oman, Bird expressed his excitement at the scale and significance of the Dangote project.

“What we are doing here is not just nation-building; it is a continent-building project. It is truly transformational for Africa,” Bird said.

He emphasized the personal purpose and inspiration he finds in leading an operation of such magnitude.

‘The refinery, already operational, is positioned to disrupt Nigeria’s import-only petroleum model. Historically, Nigeria, despite being a crude oil-producing nation, relied almost entirely on imported refined products. The Dangote Refinery changes that narrative, supplying the country’s domestic market while exporting products across the Atlantic, including gasoline deliveries to New York Harbor,” he stressed.

Bird praised the team behind the project, noting, “I stand on the shoulders of giants. The achievement to bring this refinery to life is incredible, and our focus now is transitioning it into a safe, stable, reliable, and highly efficient operation capable of generating sustainable revenues and funding ambitious growth.”

Looking ahead, Bird outlined the refinery’s expansion plans, including building the world-scale diesel hydrotreater, upgrading propane into polypropylene, and increasing capacity to 2.4 million tons per year.

He further said: “Enhancing jetty infrastructure to improve coastal distribution and bulk import/export capabilities. Expanding product complexity to ensure minimal waste and maximize efficiency. With a fully flexible, trading-led merchant refinery, the operation is designed to continue supplying both domestic and international markets efficiently, even if a single processing train goes offline.”

This flexibility, Bird explained, positions Dangote Refinery as a critical player in the global petroleum market.

Bird reiterated the refinery’s transformative significance: “We are creating not just scale, but complexity and capability. This project represents a historic shift in the energy landscape of Africa and sets a benchmark for operational excellence on the continent.”

“The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, already operational, is expected to become the largest refinery in the world, solidifying Nigeria’s role as a hub for energy production and distribution in Africa,” he stated.
