Association of Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria decries xenophobic violence in South Africa, praises regional response .

Association of Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (ANPN) has commended the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigerian Senate, as well as the governments of Ghana and South Africa for their responses to the recent violent attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.

In a statement signed by the group’s National President, Dr Ayo Fadimu and Secretary-General, Mr Niyi Jacob, the association described the incident, in which civilians reportedly attacked other Africans, destroyed properties, and disrupted livelihoods, as deeply unfortunate and unacceptable in this era of increasing global integration and continental cooperation.

According to ANPN, such acts of violence undermine the spirit of African unity and cooperation that countries on the continent have been striving to build over the years.

The group emphasized that Africa is currently at a stage where nations are breaking barriers, strengthening trade ties, and fostering regional collaboration, making such xenophobic incidents particularly distressing.

While commending the South African government and its security agencies for their efforts in responding to the crisis and attempting to restore order, the association expressed concern over reports alleging that some police officers were present during the attacks and allegedly failed to intervene effectively.

ANPN noted that such alleged inaction, if confirmed, contributed to the escalation of violence, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property.

The association called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of security personnel during the incident, stressing the need for accountability and justice for victims.

ANPN further urged African leaders to strengthen diplomatic engagement and collective security mechanisms to prevent a recurrence of such violence.

It called for renewed commitment to Pan-African unity, mutual respect among citizens of African countries, and stronger enforcement of laws that protect foreign nationals living within member states.

The group further commended the Founder and leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, for speaking out against the attacks at a time when many other political voices were silent.

ANPN noted that his public stance reflected courage and a commitment to justice, particularly in defending the dignity and safety of all Africans regardless of nationality.

The association concluded by reaffirming the importance of peace, cooperation, and shared prosperity across the continent, noting that Africa’s progress depends on unity rather than division.
