Alleged ₦100,000 extortion: LASTMA begins probe, seeks evidence

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched a full-scale investigation into allegations that its officers extorted ₦100,000 from commercial bus drivers along Coastal Road, while calling on the accuser to provide credible evidence to support the claim.

The allegation, which surfaced in a viral Facebook post by a platform identified as Objectv Media, quoted an individual named Tosin as claiming that LASTMA officials had been arresting commercial buses and demanding ₦100,000 before releasing the vehicles.

Reacting to the development, LASTMA, in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the agency does not condone any form of misconduct, abuse of office or extortion.

The Authority emphasized that it remains a disciplined, professional and ethically guided institution committed to upholding the highest standards of public service.

According to the statement, the management of LASTMA has already commenced a full-scale, impartial and comprehensive investigation into the allegation.

The agency assured members of the public that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with established laws and internal disciplinary procedures.

“As an institution, we view allegations of this nature with utmost seriousness. We have zero tolerance for misconduct and will ensure that justice is served if any of our personnel is found wanting,” the statement noted.

In a move to ensure transparency and fairness, LASTMA also invited the accuser, Tosin, to appear at the Office of the General Manager at its headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos, to provide concrete and verifiable evidence to support the claims.

The Authority stressed that the burden of proof rests on the individual making the allegation, adding that cooperation from the accuser would aid the investigative process.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, LASTMA urged members of the public to continue reporting any suspected misconduct through official and verified channels.

The agency further reiterated its dedication to maintaining orderliness on Lagos roads while ensuring that its officers operate within the bounds of integrity, discipline and professionalism.

LASTMA assured residents that it remains resolute in building a traffic management system rooted in fairness, transparency and respect for the rights of all road users.
